Lotus Bed & Breakfast is a small hostel comprising of several male or female dorms with shared bathrooms, plus private en suite rooms, all air conditioned. The reception is located upstairs from the street, with two additional floors above. It includes free breakfast, towels, and Wi-Fi.
The Location
The hostel is located in the downtown area, a twenty-minute walk from the Sule Pagoda. From the airport, it is about a forty-five-minute drive and about an hour from the highway bus terminal, though both journeys take longer around rush hour. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the area, though late at night your options become more limited and you may need to head to Chinatown to find food (about a twenty-five-minute walk).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The shared bathrooms have three toilet/shower rooms, one separate shower, and one separate toilet. All have shampoo and body wash, rails for your belongings, and hot water. The sinks have hand wash and little shelves for your toiletries next to them. They are kept very clean.
The rooms are clean and comfortable. The dorms have large bunk beds with comfortable mattresses, shelves, power points, a light, partition walls, and privacy curtains. They have large lockers in the rooms, for which you are provided a key; they have enough space for medium-sized luggage. The room doors are lockable. The rooms have a desk and chair inside, along with a bench to sit on -- very useful for those given top bunks.
Common Spaces
The first floor has not only the reception (where you are welcome to leave your luggage once checked out), but also a dining room in which breakfast is served. You must select your breakfast the night before from a menu including the options of an American breakfast, a noodle dish, sticky rice, or a local meat dish, plus you get fruits on the side and either tea or coffee. This dining room also operates as a restaurant where you can order local dishes until 9 p.m., or use it is as a social area. There is a small selection of books to read or exchange, plus the equipment to prepare the local beauty/skincare product thanaka for free, should you wish to try it. There are a couple of small balconies on each floor for smoking.
The guests in the hostel comprise of travelers and long-stay local students, meaning the atmosphere is quite calm and not as social as a typical hostel. The hostel also doubles as a training school for young Burmese going into hospitality, meaning the quality of service is very high and your every need is truly tended to.
Summary
This is a very lovely, clean, and comfortable hostel. The downsides are slightly the location and the atmosphere. If you are looking for a quiet space, here is perfect, but look elsewhere for a party. Had it been a little closer to Chinatown and more backpackery, it would've very much deserved five stars.
