Alibi Hostel Leeuwarden

The Review

Alibi Hostel Leeuwarden offers a unique opportunity to stay in a former prison at a budget-friendly price right on the edge of the city centre in the Blockhuispoort.

The Location

This hostel has a great location, with all of Leeuwarden's sights within a easy, fifteen-minute walk of the hostel. The train and bus station is also just a ten- to fifteen-minute walk or a quick bus trip away, giving you easy access to other beautiful Frisian towns and cities that are worth a visit. The Blockhuispoort where the hostel is located is also a cultural hub with art galleries, restaurants, and bars; the lower floor of the hostel is also home to a range of artisan shops trading out of the prison cells. You also have lots of different restaurants and bars in the city centre as well as some smaller supermarkets within a ten-minute walk.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Most of the rooms in Alibi Hostel are located in prison cells, so you really feel like you are staying in prison with authentic prison doors that occasionally lock people in as they require a button to unlock them from the inside. The seventeen-bed dorm room is a little bit cramped, as it is of the coffin-capsule style that are three high. Each capsule is equipped with a power socket and reading light as well as a privacy curtain and lockers are provided to secure your belongings. Smaller four-bed dorms are also available, which give you a little bit more space to move.

Private rooms are also a great option with two- and four-bed private rooms that very much feel and look like a prison cell and are fairly sparse with just the beds and a small desk and chair. In the summer months these rooms do lack ventilation and the provided fan does nothing to stop the stuffiness, so you need to leave the door to the room open or suffocate. If you want a more luxurious option, then you can opt for the luxury double that has its own en suite bathroom. All other rooms share single sex toilets and showers that are clean and practical and are located across the first and second floor.

Common Spaces

The hostel has three different comfy common areas that are perfect for relaxing. If you just want to relax with a book, then you can head to the reading corner with a book exchange. For a more social vibe, you have the bar and lounge area on the second floor with prison cells that have been converted into a relaxing lounge area. The bar is open in the evening and also serves a paid breakfast in the morning. The kitchen and dining area on the first floor are perfect for cooking simple meals. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel and they are able to store luggage in reception if you want to do some exploring. The hostel could be a social place to hang out, but it depends on the guests at the time. Once the shops on the lower level open, you do get tourists entering the prison cell block, so it is not the most private of hostels during the day.

Alibi Hostel offers a very unique opportunity to stay comfortably in prison with the ability to walk out the door freely the next morning.
