Mundo Nuevo Minca is a sustainably constructed hostel tucked on top of a mountain and surrounded by amazing views of the mountains, jungle, ocean, and Santa Marta.
The Location
Mundo Nuevo Minca hostel is set on top of a mountain surrounded by beautiful views in every direction. The remote location makes you feel secluded and closer to nature, but also makes things harder to access. Although you can purchase delicious vegetarian meals and drinks from the hostel, it can be more expensive than buying goods in town. The buses drop people off in town about an hour's walk from the hostel. Although it is walkable and surrounded by beautiful scenery, it can be a difficult walk up the mountain, because it is quite steep, especially if you are carrying a large backpack. However, moto-bikes will give you a ride up for a fee in about twenty minutes. There is nothing close by as far as stores and shops but you can access many trails for hiking and miradors (lookouts), and reserve tours from the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is mostly dormitory rooms with bunk beds and a few private rooms available in Mundo Nuevo Minca. The rooms are fairly large and cleaned daily. The bunks are newly constructed and in good condition. There are large storage lockers available in each dormitory, but you need your own lock. There is a separate building, which contains the bedrooms, about a two-minute walk from the front desk and breakfast area. Bathrooms and showers are also built outside with separate facilities and surrounded by a bamboo and natural construction wall for privacy.
Common Spaces
Upon entering Mundo Nuevo Minca hostel, there are two benches, two hammocks, and a table near the front desk where people can get more info on tours and also access Wi-Fi (it can’t be accessed in the dormitories). After walking around to the back, you will see the kitchen, a large dining area, and a pool table. This is the center of the hostel and where all the meals are served. In the back of the hostel, close to the dorms, there is a small porch with a roof around the sides, which has numerous hammocks and seats with great views of the surrounding area and the permaculture garden.
Summary
What sets Mundo Nuevo Minca hostel apart from other hostels are its values and goals. They are striving to be completely sustainable and working with nearby indigenous people to reach this objective. The importance of this objective is evident when you see the permaculture farm used to provide food for their meals, the extensive recycling and waste management systems, natural construction methods, and witnessing them working closely with the local indigenous communities. They provide tours for anyone wanting to learn more about permaculture, natural construction, and a myriad other interesting classes and workshops in addition to the other tours. The secluded location ensures a closer connection with nature, but also makes it more challenging to access certain things. This is a perfect hostel for anyone that shares the same values of living sustainable and that wants a more remote, tranquil hostel tucked in a beautiful setting in nature.
