Good, clean, friendly
Really helpful staff. Clean hostel. Good spacious lockers. As there is not 1 central sitting area and hostel frequented by older Norwegians it takes time to chat with others compared to other countries, good well equipped kitchen.
Marken Gjestehus is a great hostel with a wonderful, welcoming feeling that overtakes you when the elevator door opens into the reception area. It seems as if the hostel is in a residential building of a lot of Norwegian families, but no worries -- the hostel is on its own floor.
The Location
The location can be a bit difficult to find when you don't know the area or don't have a map, however, just ask around and you will definitely find the entrance. The hostel is about fifteen minutes' walking distance from all the main Bergen sights. A cute cobblestoned street is just a few steps away with cute cafes, spots to eat, and a grocery store. On the main drag to the city center, there's even an affordable hot dog stand. The train station is a ten-minute walking trip in the opposite direction of the city center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
As for the large female dorms, although there were a lot of guests, the room is very spacious, leaving ample room for everyone to spread stuff about the room and still not feel closed in. There is even a table for any work that needs to be done, a couch for lounging, lockers for important things, and a private bathroom in the room. In the four-bed dorm, larger lockers line the walls here, but there's no private bath. The bathrooms are now located out in the hallways where both toilets and showers have their own designated doors. Bathrooms are clean and we could find no problems.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are big and welcoming. There's enough seating in the common area to accommodate a large group wanting to mingle and just take a relaxing break. There is only one communal computer to share among the whole hostel, but we did not find that to be a problem. The kitchen is also a great place to take a seat -- with windows overlooking the beautiful Bergen panorama, who wouldn't want to eat some breakfast here? The kitchen is stocked with every appliance you may need to cook a quick meal. In addition, there is a laundry room -- it's quite small, but they do have one and it is accessible to all!
Summary
Overall, this is a great recommendation to Bergen guests. Everything is in walking distance to what you need in the city, you get a comfortable stay, and great staff all rolled into one!
Good hostel
This is a great hostel. It's walking distance from the train station. The dorm had an en suite bathroom and lockers.
Perfect stay right in the center of Bergen
This was by far better than the other hostel I tried during my last trip to Bergen. Conveniently located just a short walk from the railway or bus Station away and pretty Close to everything else in Bergen. Great common room with nice view! I loved the wooden floor! Bright and clean location.
Great, comfortable
One of the most comfortable hostels I've stayed in by far. Good -- Comfortable bed, personal locker, basics like oil & salt provided in the kitchen, books available for guests to read, large comfortable room for 10-bed all female dorm with en suite (love it!). Can be improved -- Staff can be more friendly, another girl in the dorm was issued the same locker as me (security issues!), would be nice if breakfast could be included (considering the price), please provide labels for guests to write their name on & stick on their food, dorm could be cleaned more thoroughly (noticed the floor not cleaned at all).
Good Location, Well equipped
Location is very nice, near to station and terminal (about 5 min by walk). Helpful staff and especially the kitchen was excellent!
Simply The Best
This is a very good hostel. It has fully equip kitchen, very close to the train/bus station and not to mention the city centre as well. The supermarket is very close as well and it's very relax too. The room are great and so is the shower too. The view from my room and I believe for every room it has a good view of the outside of Bergen city centre too. It's so good that I decided to stay another night here. Don't go anywhere else. Stay here and you won't regret it! The staff are very great and helpful as well so that's a big plus!
Overall positive!
Staff very nice/helpful. Physical space well laid out, lots of bathrooms. Clean! Kitchen space could be good but needs organization, like shelves for non refrigerator items. Also need effective way of marking food (felt tip on waxy milk containers doesn't work). Good location -- close to train and sights.
Fantastic location, great place to stay in you are looking to explore Bergen. The staff were really helpful with my late check in and helped booking me a taxi to the airport. Highly recommend.
Liked: Easy to arrive, near downtown and nice views of the city from the windows Didn't like: Really nothing
It was so clean, with a bright and airy decor. It was nice to have so many washrooms available and the atmosphere was so friendly.
Liked: We arrived when the reception was already closed but they prepared everything and told us via email how to get into the room we would stay. There we found the room key, bed-linen and more information. It was a 10-bed-female-dorm which looked nice and was spacious, there were lockers in a separate room, a big mirror and a huge bathroom. In the hostel you can find many bathrooms and showers and there were a few places where you could hang out with other travellers. The location is great, very close to the train station. The receptionist was friendly and also the people who cleaned the room talked to us and were friendly. I would definitely stay there again. Didn't like: -
Liked: This was a great hostel. It was central in Bergen and close to the station. It was clean, bright and friendly with great amenities including a well stocked kitchen, dining area and tv/lounge room.Lockers were easy to use, accessible to everyone (came with your room key) and large enough to fit a suitcase. It was also nice and quiet. Didn't like: None
Liked: I stayed in a 10 bed female dorm. It had it's own bathroom and lockers. There were also plenty of other toilets/bathrooms available. Location is good, right near the bus/train station. It is quiet. Good internet and large sitting area for meals. Well equipped kitchen. Didn't like: Kitchen could have been cleaned more regularly.
I stayed here for one night only and it was a pleasant stay. I stayed in a ten people dorm. The room is spacious and we have our own bathroom. The bathroom was clean and they provide toiletries as well. ( left by other travellers, but still ) the staff there are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back again!
Liked: Very nice layout with clean rooms and bathrooms and massive free storage lockers that come with a key. Didn't like: Nothing
Excellent location.
Liked: This hostel is really cute and has a cozy feeling to it. Only here for one night, but the layout of the 4-bed dorm was great with a spectacular view of the city as e guesthouse is on the 4th floor. The rooms were nicely decorated and the lockers were nice and big to fit everything. It is Ina. Good location and super close to the train station, was tricky to find at first. Didn't like: I think the address of the hostel should change to the actual street address of the entrance, this would have made it much easier to find.
Liked: The dorm room had its own bathroom and it was very spacious. There were also lots of couches and areas where you can socialize with other guests. The location was pretty amazinc Didn't like: None
