Sitting quietly on the fringe of Alice Springs, Alice's Secret Travellers Inn is a friendly, cosy refuge for travelers passing through Central Australia. Having recently changed ownership and been revamped, Alice's Secret is an idyllic desert haven at the gateway to Uluru.
The hostel is just a short, ten-minute walk from town, but taxis are cheap and highly recommended after a night out, as Alice Springs can be one of the more dangerous areas of Australia to walk home at night. However once you're within the locked gates of the hostel, guests can enjoy full use of the swimming pool, shaded garden, TV room, kitchen, and air-conditioned bedrooms.
For many travelers, Alice Springs is a base camp for excursions to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which is usually done as part of a tour. The hostel's owners have a working relationship with The Rock Tour in town, so travelers are in good hands. However it is also set up for longer stays, with guests welcome to stay for long periods at a time if they are working.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The days can get extremely hot, but the air-conditioned rooms are a great place to cool down. The bathrooms are small but clean, and hot and cold water runs freely.
Its location in the middle of the desert does not slow down Alice Springs's nightlife and the bars can get very lively at weekends. But don't expect to bring the drinks back to the room when it is closing time, as Alice's Secret prides itself on being a quiet, no-party hostel. The message is plastered over walls, its online advertisements, and in the emails when booking a room, so read it loud and clear -- if you are looking for a great social scene and noisy nightlife, this is not the hostel for you. What you will get is a relaxed atmosphere with lazy afternoons by the pool, reading a book in the cool shade of the gum trees, or winding down in the hazy evening with a game of giant outdoors chess. Free tea and coffee are supplied all day, but the kitchen is ill-equipped for the people staying there. There is just one hob, one sink, and no oven, and it can get very crowded at peak cooking time -- so it's best to time your meals carefully.
Set in beautiful desert surroundings and a very convenient location from which to access Alice Springs, Alice's Secret is a great place to recover from an Uluru tour or simply while away the time lounging in the sun or making new friends by the pool. The owner, Seb, is on the ball and certainly won't put up with anyone threatening to breach the peace of the slice of Eden he has carved out of an otherwise hostile environment.
