Alice's Secret Traveller's Inn Reviews

Sitting quietly on the fringe of Alice Springs, Alice's Secret Travellers Inn is a friendly, cosy refuge for travelers passing through Central Australia. Having recently changed ownership and been revamped, Alice's Secret is an idyllic desert haven at the gateway to Uluru.

The Location

The hostel is just a short, ten-minute walk from town, but taxis are cheap and highly recommended after a night out, as Alice Springs can be one of the more dangerous areas of Australia to walk home at night. However once you're within the locked gates of the hostel, guests can enjoy full use of the swimming pool, shaded garden, TV room, kitchen, and air-conditioned bedrooms.

For many travelers, Alice Springs is a base camp for excursions to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which is usually done as part of a tour. The hostel's owners have a working relationship with The Rock Tour in town, so travelers are in good hands. However it is also set up for longer stays, with guests welcome to stay for long periods at a time if they are working.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The days can get extremely hot, but the air-conditioned rooms are a great place to cool down. The bathrooms are small but clean, and hot and cold water runs freely.

Common Spaces

Its location in the middle of the desert does not slow down Alice Springs's nightlife and the bars can get very lively at weekends. But don't expect to bring the drinks back to the room when it is closing time, as Alice's Secret prides itself on being a quiet, no-party hostel. The message is plastered over walls, its online advertisements, and in the emails when booking a room, so read it loud and clear -- if you are looking for a great social scene and noisy nightlife, this is not the hostel for you. What you will get is a relaxed atmosphere with lazy afternoons by the pool, reading a book in the cool shade of the gum trees, or winding down in the hazy evening with a game of giant outdoors chess. Free tea and coffee are supplied all day, but the kitchen is ill-equipped for the people staying there. There is just one hob, one sink, and no oven, and it can get very crowded at peak cooking time -- so it's best to time your meals carefully.

Set in beautiful desert surroundings and a very convenient location from which to access Alice Springs, Alice's Secret is a great place to recover from an Uluru tour or simply while away the time lounging in the sun or making new friends by the pool. The owner, Seb, is on the ball and certainly won't put up with anyone threatening to breach the peace of the slice of Eden he has carved out of an otherwise hostile environment.

Alice's Secret is the perfect name for this place. Not only is it located in the remote, central Australian town of Alice Springs, but it's a real find and some could say a secret. It's described as the smallest hostel in Alice, but it has a lot of heart and is very clean and friendly -- you won't regret booking here!

The Location

Alice's Secret is located about five minutes' walk from the centre of town across the dry and sandy Todd River bed -- use the bridge if there's ever any water in the river. There's free parking onsite if you have a car. The airport shuttle will drop you off here and pickup when it's time to leave.

Rooms and Bathrooms

All the rooms at Alice's Secret are air conditioned and there are choices of dormitories and private rooms. The rooms are kind of littered about the property in sheds and outhouses, making it a colourful and characterful place. Linen is included in the price and they are clean. Bathrooms are communal and quite decorative and tasteful.

Common Spaces

There's a swimming pool onsite, perfect for all those hot Alice days you get in this part of Australia. Guests also have access to a big kitchen, where free tea and coffee are available all day. There are plenty of outdoor garden areas to enjoy, a big chess board to play if you're hanging out here for the day, an outdoor BBQ to crank up at night, and an air conditioned TV/video lounge room for just whiling away some time. There's also a didgeridoo or two lying around, should you want a bit of practice. Alice's Secret does have a paid Wi-Fi hotspot you can utilise onsite that works in most rooms, even those quite far from reception.

They can also set you up and advise on tours you may wish to book around Alice or nationwide. If you book a tour with them they give you a free night and free Wi-Fi. Alice's Secret rents camping gear and bikes and help you learn to drive a 4WD. The staff are brilliant at making you feel welcome, helping you organise your activities, and will even wave you off at the door when you leave -- they make you want to stay here and come back.

Friendly, Comfortable, Affordable

Personally I loved this Hostel, I stayed in a six-bed mixed dorm that was comfortable and clean. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and bend over backwards to help with anything. There are no annoying deposits to pay and the kitchen has everything you would ever need. There is a good TV room and book exchange, internet, payphone, laundry, and swimming pool. They organised a day trip to Uluru with Emu Run Tours for me and it was absolutely brilliant. It was so homey that I stayed three nights instead of two even though I really didn't have time! I can't recommend this hostel enough it has been my favourite in Australia.

Not a good experience.

I slept one night at the decorated camping trailer. The room was exceptionally small and I could hear what people in the other room were doing and what they were talking about. this can give you an image of the walls' quality. The overall cleanliness standards were below average.

I really did appreciate the friendliness of the whole staff. It made me feel at home at the other side of the world and Ian was really wonderful confirming my other hostel for me. Nice place and in a good position too. I really did enjoyed my stay at Alices Secret.

This is a really nice place to stay. They arranged a really nice atmosphere with their common room and kitchen. You can have cornflakes and milk and tea all day long. It's a bit familiar and you have great opportunities to relax in the very nice new swimming pool or in the hamocks. The rooms are clean and they knwo a lot people, which could help to find a job. They've got a great pick up and drop off service, even to the train station (the ghan). One of the best hostels I stayed in because of the very friendly staff.

Julia April 2006

The double rooms are spacious, and have heaters in them, which definitely helped at night. There is a TV room with a good selection of videos to watch, and a shelf of books that help to pass time. The kitchen is a good size as long as there's not too many people cooking at the same time although the oven was a bit dodgy. It felt a bit like a caravan park, because you have to go outside to go to the toilet/shower, which isn't the nicest of things to do when it's freezing! However, there is a bathroom indoors, which a lot of people use instead. There's not a great deal to do in Alice Springs, so most people don't stay very long, which makes this place ok to spend a couple of nights.

Everything a small hostel should be! Friendly, comfortable and very chilled out. Loads of things to the badminton court and table tennis...and Julia and Ian are the best of hosts.

A short walk out of town but not to far. Felt not save leaving the pub at night, kept been sworn at by the locals, strangely just had the same in Cairns

Such a great place to stay. Its got a quirky vibe to it which is great, facilities are spot on and Seb was so helpful with heaps of recommendations of things to do

Great little hostel if you're going into Alice springs. Good place to stay if you want a safe and cozy stay.

Staff, location and dcor was amazing! I could have spent hours looking at all the artwork around the hostel.

June seems to be low season for Alice Springs, and it did get VERY cold and rainy. This may be due to why there were not many travelers there to make friends with. In summer, I can imagine this place would be amazing atmosphere.

Would NOT recommend this hostel. The decor is really weird and spacey. Didn't feel safe there and was glad that I was only staying there for two nights. There isn't very much room in the kitchen plus there where mice in the hostel (and in my room). The showers doesn't "close" - it's just a room with two shower curtains, so you don't have that much privacy there.

This place is gold. It has a beautiful tranquil vibe and hosts Seb and Miriam are amazing. Seb is always on hand with great advice and even helped us fix our bikes. Heart felt thanks to you and of course Emily the mini dragon. We will be back!

Great stay in this hostel. The atmosphere is really chill and all the artwork is amazing!!

After 2.5 years travelling in Australia I fully recommend to go there!

Funky place to stay with individually themed caravans, dorms and cabins. Located walking distance to city centre. Great services and advice on what there is to do in the area provided on arrival. Would definitely stay again!

Amazing hostel. Such lovely staff and the vibe around the place is just really special. We stayed in a private room and it was cool and clean. Cooking facilities are well stocked with pots and pans etc. They have a big spice shelf that people can use. Seb was a really kind host and kept our speaker safe for us when we left it behind. Thanks for two great stays.

Great place, would definitely stay there again. I love the decor and atmosphere. Staff were fantastic and helpful, everything was clean.

Absolutely amazing first hostel experience

I recommend this hostel if you travel to Alice Springs. Parking is safe but a bit of a pain.

Awesome staff, very friendly and helpful. Overall great value and great vibes here

Alice's Secret is a wonderful small hostel just outside the town centre. I stayed in a private room which was great, you can tell the care put into this place by the owners. Service by reception was also excellent and they gave very helpful advice.

Great hostel. Rooms are nice and clean. Staff are amazing, will be back for sure

Really cute hostel, funkily decorated. The guests and staff were super welcoming and friendly! Location was easy to get into town from. Great place, would definitely stay again.
