Sovanphum Villa

The Review

Our first impression is that the building that houses Sovanphum Villa looks like a typical old-style villa. The courtyard is lovely, with lots of plants, and this creates a cozy atmosphere.

The Location

The location is fantastic. It's within walking distance of the Royal Palace, riverfront, and all the shops and restaurants down the street. Signage in the street is large, red, and easily visible. The hostel is down a little driveway between two buildings, which is good because you don't hear any noise from the main road.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The four-bed dorm room is on the first floor and is large with plenty of space for luggage and more. The beds have sturdy, wooden frames and the mattresses and pillows are comfortable. The room also has a table and two chairs, which is a nice area in which to just sit and relax, without being out in the common area. The air conditioner is controlled by the guests. There are large windows in the room, but unfortunately the curtains cannot be opened, as the window looks out onto the top of the staircase and corridor, where guests come and go. As you come up the stairs to the first floor, there is a lounge areas with cage-like lockers. These lockers are large enough to fit a backpack. The beds are equipped with electric sockets and a reading light.

The bathroom is en suite and fairly large. There is one toilet, shower, and hand basin. The water pressure is not that great and there is no rail for a towel and clothes.

Common Spaces

As you walk through the front entrance of the property, you're in the courtyard, which doubles as the kitchen/cafe area. It's beautifully decorated with tables and chairs and lots of plants to the right and a kitchen to the left. This area could be a great work space, but unfortunately there aren't any electric sockets near the tables. As you walk through this area, you reach the front door and enter the reception area. In the reception are a few sofas and a long, uncomfortable-looking wooden bench. This area is not really very comfortable for socializing. There are a few bedrooms that lead off this room. Our room is upstairs on the first floor. There is an open terrace-type area on the first floor, where the lockers are; again, there are no electric sockets. This is really a problem, as the only place to work or charge phones is in the dorm room.

The staff are friendly, although they are not very fluent in English. It's not really too much of a problem, as we still managed to make ourselves understood. The Wi-Fi in this place is super fast.

The place is pretty basic, and with the lack of electric sockets, it's not very convenient for working travelers. It's also not a backpacker, party-type hostel, as it lacks the staff and atmosphere. If you're after a quiet place to rest, then this is a good place to be.
