Ta Van Hostel is run by a local, English-speaking family that offers free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and maps for all guests in the hostel.
The Location
The hostel is located right in the middle of Ta Van village in Sapa, so it is very convenient for guests to hike to the nearby waterfall and water reservoirs. As it's located in a village, the hostel is somewhat remote, so it is not easy to hail a passing taxi. Hence, guests who would like to get back to Sapa town will have to book a taxi or shuttle bus via the hostel. The hostel is only a short, twenty-minute drive from Sapa town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms do not come with air conditioning, but this is not a major concern, considering that the weather in Sapa is not warm. Charging ports are limited in the rooms, and are not located near the beds, which may prove to be a slight inconvenience to guests. Beds and pillows are clean and comfortable, and the bed frames are not sturdy. Lockers with built-in locks are also provided at the reception desk.
All rooms come with an en suite toilet with warm showers and Western-style toilet seats. The hostel does provide towels, but no shower gel or shampoo. The showers have decent water pressure and are sparkly clean.
Common Spaces
The common area is located right outside the room, and is facing the farms and padifields, making for a great view. The common area is equipped with numerous hammocks and wooden sofas for all guests.
The dining area is located a short, five-minute walk away inside a different building. Like the common area, the dining area also has a great view, as it is overlooking the hills. Alcohol is sold at night, and guests are free to bring their own alcohol.
Breakfast consists of simple fruit, eggs, and Vietnamese pancakes with honey. Guests can also have their lunch and dinner here, though prices are much more expensive than restaurants in the area.
Summary
Ta Van Hostel is a great place to stay for those who are visiting the villages. However, guests who are more cost-conscious will have to avoid buying meals, drinks, or taxis from the hostel, as the prices charged by the hostel tend to be higher than the market rate.
