Every so often, you come across a place that sits head and shoulders above all others -- Tsumeb Backpackers is one of these places that raise the bar above what is normally expected in a budget hostel.
The Location
Located in the southeast of Tsumeb, one-and-a-half kilometers from the center of town, bus station, and shopping malls, Tsumeb Backpackers is on a very quiet street, but within easy walk of the town's amenities.
Rooms and Bathrooms
All the rooms here are of exceptional standard for a budget guesthouse. There are three twin rooms in the main house that share spotless bathrooms and a large sitting room with flat-screen DSTV. The dorm is in a separate chalet and is way above what you would expect to get for the budget price. The dorm has its own kitchen and sitting room also with DSTV. There are five beds downstairs -- four bunks and a single -- and three single beds up the spiral staircase upstairs. Both floors have en suite bathrooms and the downstairs dorm has a bathtub. Hot water is available twenty-four hours a day. The mattresses are good and firm and the linen is crisp and clean with duvets and two pillows per bed. There is copious cupboard space downstairs for storage, bedside tables, and four power points. The kitchen is sparkling and well equipped with microwave, toaster, kettle, six-hob gas cooker, and fridge. There are plenty of pots, pans, and cutlery and free tea and coffee is provided. There is a small area by the dorm chalet for camping with an outside shower and toilet. All the bathrooms are very clean and tiled, with towels provided for all guests.
Common Spaces
Both the dorm and private rooms' sitting areas have comfortable sofas and DSTV; the free Wi-Fi is best accessed from the main house sitting room or around the poolside shared kitchen and BBQ area, although the signal does just about stretch to the dorm. There is a combi van in the back garden, which has been converted into a small bar, and there are hammocks and seats dotted around the leafy garden for relaxing. The poolside shared kitchen doubles as the breakfast bar, and like the dorm kitchen it's very well equipped and clean. A free breakfast is provided in the price for all guests; it's a serve-yourself spread of fruit, bread, jam and spreads, and cereals and eggs, with tea or filter coffee. It really sets you up for the whole day. For drivers, there is parking space for about four vehicles and the property is walled and accessed via security gates.
Summary
This really is a lovely little place that gives you far more than you have a right to expect for such a budget price. Dorm sleepers especially have it good, with their own chalet and all amenities separate from the rest of the house. The owners live on the property, which probably explains the high level of cleanliness throughout the house; they are very friendly and social in the evenings around the pool and BBQ. Trips to Etosha National Park can be arranged here and there are four bikes for free use. Tsumeb Backpackers is fantastic value. It's almost a boutique backpackers' but at a budget price. The beds are so comfortable, and to relax in a hot bath after a long, dusty journey is usually only something to look forward to when you get home. The common areas are tastefully decorated with ornaments, pictures, and maps and the whole place is just so homey. This place is highly recommended.
