El Greco Hostel is a small hostel in the town of Kalabaka, perfect for the traveler who wants to visit the Meteora Monasteries for a day or two.
Since the town of Kalabaka is so small, everything a traveler would need is nearby. Thus, the property is located four minutes walking from the train station, four minutes from the bus station, and even less from the small restaurant and café hub, what would be considered the main street. There is a well-stocked supermarket just down the street, as well as a café and bakery, but anything in the city would be within a 15-minute walk at the most.
The building where the hostel is located might seem a little deserted at first, but the hostel itself is located on the first floor and the reception is located upstairs.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is very small, although the rooms have eight bunk beds, with a plywood wall separating four beds. The bathrooms are inside the rooms, two per room, and are quite big. The only caveat is that the water heater must be turned on five minutes before showering but it is not that big of an issue. There are plenty of power outlets near the beds, as well as very spacious lockers inside the rooms. The reception is open until 11:00 pm.
There are no common spaces to speak of, since the property is so small. The kitchen is basically a sink and is only suited for the most basic meals. There is a balcony of sorts which is nice to relax, but a traveler looking to spend a few hours researching or whatever would be limited to their bunk, or should go to one of the nearby cafés. Most surrounding cafes have Wi-Fi. The internet is okay throughout the property for light browsing, but it is not suitable for more serious tasks, such as backing up pictures in the cloud.
This hostel is suitable for a traveler looking to spend a day, maybe a day and a half in the town, which is the average time most travelers would be looking to spend there anyway. The town is small and while it basically lives off tourism, isn't tremendously well prepared for it; this hostel is an example of that. It is functional to the type of traveler visiting Kalabaka and the type of tourism he or she will be looking for, and it is almost certain the visit will be for a very short time.
