Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

The moment you enter Red Palm hostel, you are made to feel welcome and at home in this old and airy colonial building. The friendly and helpful staff and owners are always around to answer any questions or just have a chat, and they make an effort to learn the names of everyone who is staying in the hostel. The Location Red Palm is in the Golden Triangle, so a central location for visiting many of the city’s main attractions. It’s about five minutes’ walk from Huang Tuah train and monorail station, and about three minutes to Imbi monorail, meaning you’re fairly well connected, with direct lines to KL Sentral. Red Palm is on Tengkat Tong Shin, which runs parallel to Jalan Alor, one of the main eating streets full of hawker stalls and cafes spilling onto the road in the evening -- it’s not the cheapest place to eat, but it’s atmospheric and there’s plenty of choice. There’s a very good Indian restaurant next door to the hostel, which will serve you food through the wall; the Chinese beef noodle stall over the road is also worth checking out for tasty, cheap food. Rooms and Bathrooms The six-bed dorm is at the front of the building with a balcony looking onto the street below. It’s airy and the bunks are a good size. The door to the dorm is never locked, but we don’t feel security is an issue as the staff/owners are always around and know everyone who is staying at the hostel. There are only a few plug sockets in the dorm, but everyone uses the sockets in the common area for charging items -- it feels safe to leave items charging. There are small lockers available for a deposit in the corridor outside the dorm; boxes for putting your belongings in are under the bed. Air conditioning runs at night and there is also a fan in the dorm so it’s a nice cool room. We stayed in the dorm and one of the private rooms, which is also spacious and cool with comfy beds. The walls between rooms are thin and sound travels easily, but we found the hostel quiet at night and didn’t have a problem with noise. There are two toilets and two showers, which is plenty for such a small hostel. The place is kept really clean -- they cleaned every day we were there. Common Spaces The common area is a large, light, and airy room at the front of the building -- the reception desk is also based here, so they know who is coming and going. There is paid-for internet available on the hostel’s computers, plus free Wi-Fi throughout the building. There’s a comfy sofa and loads of cushions for lounging about and watching TV/DVDs. There are also a couple of guitars if you’re interested! Breakfast of bread, jam, bananas, and cereal is included, plus you can help yourself to hot drinks and bananas throughout the day. At the front of the hostel is a terrace area with tables and chairs, which is great for having a beer and meeting other travelers. Smoking is allowed in the downstairs common area, and alcohol can only be consumed outside. Summary We loved Red Palm and would definitely stay there again. It’s a relaxed place to stay and chill out and grab a few drinks with other travelers in the terraced area at the front of the hostel. The staff and owners are lovely and very accommodating -- they let us hang at the hostel and use the showers and Wi-Fi until we had to leave at 10 p.m., despite checking out of the dorm at noon. We thoroughly recommend a stay here!

Very good, a safe haven in the centre of KL!
I only ended up staying one-night at the Red Palm as I had made plans to travel to the north of Malaysia, but the one-night I was there was a great experience. Very friendly, run by a local and not a nameless businessman, and as mentioned in some of the other reviews, the Indian restaurant next door provided great service to a table in the hostel courtyard! The city hop-on, hop-off bus stops almost directly opposite, so this was very convenient for a quick tour around the city. Bathrooms were very clean, and there was a large choice of dvds to choose from if you just want to relax in front of the TV. inexpensive internet facilities also there if you need them. Great place to meet other backpackers!

Amazing! Highly recommended
This place was nothing short of amazing! We were only able to book one night, as it was pretty highly booked up, however after trying 2 other hostels in KL this one was by far the best and would have happily stayed much longer! The place s clean and really has a sense of home -- the staff are very friendly offering great maps and excellent advice. Don't stay anywhere other than here -- after staying in many places in Kuala Lumpur this would be the best one -- great value for your money.

Red Palm is most excellent. I booked one night hoping to pass through Kuala Lumpur and ended up staying three. The staff is incredibly helpful, the common area is very conducive to meeting other travelers, and the location is ideal. As if it wasn't perfect enough already, there's also an Indian restaurant next door where you can just pass money over the wall and have them make you food on demand. I'll stay here again for sure.

Red Palm are fantastic. We arrived late at nite to be greeted with such friendliness, and hospitality. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and even drawing us a map of specific places that we wanted to go. The restaurant next door is great and is open late and make the best Roti Canai and its really cheap (three RM for roti and milo ice). Rooms are nice and basic and shared bathroom is clean. Close to bus station, and the city. Easily accessible. Comes highly recommended!

This place is fantastic, I can't rate it high enough! The atmosphere is just so cool, everyone seems to want to have a good time, and always up for a few beers out in the garden. The rooms are all clean and airy, and the bathrooms are, importantly, very clean as well. The communal area downstairs is very cosy, with hundreds of DVD's to watch on a rainy day. The staff are so friendly and helpful, just a quick example of this, while we where staying here, it was an irish girl's birthday (always an excuse for a party), but the staff cooked all the guests dinner, and made her a cake. So it truly was a fantastic night. I know this is all very gushing and a wee bit cheesy, but there really is nothing bad to say about this place, oh actually there is -- its always fully booked so book in advance if you can. I urge anyone going to KL to stay here!

This place is FANTASTIC! Not only is it extremely clean, neat and tidy, it has the best location right in Central Kuala Lumpur — Bukit Bintang! I stayed here three nights and the owners of this hostel are so welcoming that I found it hard to leave! Kuala Lumpur is a hot and humid city and this place is wonderful and tranquil amidst all the hustle and bustle that surrounds this hostel in this never sleeping city. The hostel is great with lots of DVDs to watch and helpful advice whenever it is needed from the owners. It's a wonderful, charming and homely place in a brilliant city. Highly recommended and better than any other hostel in Kuala Lumpur! 10 out of 10!

Red Palm is the best hostel I have stayed in, in Kuala Lumpur. I had a relaxing stay and the staff felt like friends by the time I left. My room was small yet homely. The kitchen facilities are great. DVDs and the Internet are available for monsoon afternoons. The malls are close but not too close. The only reason not to book here is if you are in KL to party, in which case you're in the wrong city anyway.
