The Space Inn is a cheap place to stay if you find yourself caught out and miss the ferry to Kapas, or if you want to see Malaysia's fastest growing city. The Space Inn is vaguely themed as a space hostel, but this just means white walls and some chrome scattered around. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll be transported into the outer realms of the galaxy.
The Location
There isn't a whole lot going on in Kuala Terrenganu, but there's a large market with some of the best Malay food around, a Chinatown with cheap and tasty Chinese food, and plenty to see if you're interested in the life of your average Malaysian. Something to note -- Kuala Terrenganu has a lot of promotion for healthy living and it's very refreshing to see signs encouraging walking. The place has a nice feel.
It's easy to get around from The Space Inn. You can walk to the big market in less than ten minutes, the bus station in ten minutes, and Chinatown in less than ten minutes. There are restaurants across the road for lunch, a computer repair shop out the front, and a convenience store around the corner. It's as good as it gets there.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are very clean, as are the rooms. The place is mostly empty, probably because it largely caters to transients coming and going from Kapas Island, but it's well cared for. There's plenty of space in the rooms and a light and power point for every bed. There's also an area to hang clothes in the dorm, out the window, which is very appreciated. Bathrooms are large, stocked with soap, have space to hang your clothes, and are very agreeable.
Common Spaces
There's not a lot going on in the way of common spaces. You can hang out in the lobby, but no one but the staff do. The rooms are a more comfortable place to hang out -- the air conditioning is great. The guests tend to be friendly and if you have a chat you'll make some friends. The Kapas crowd is very social.
The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and has free tea, coffee, and hot chocolate, for those who want to get the most for their money.
Summary
Sneaky tip -- they let us book a single bed in the dorm for two people and charged us for one bed. It's cheap, clean, roomy, and if you can swing it you can put a couple in a single bed and stay for pretty much nothing. If you need a place to stay before or after Kapas, this is the best place to do it. The staff do a good job, the Wi-Fi is fantastic, and it's a comfortable stay. An island-hopper couldn't want much more.
