Friend's Hostel is a big, recently renovated, Colonial-style hostel in the Old Town of Quito. It is excellent for those interested in staying in the center and exploring the historic part of the city.
The Location
It is located in the Old Town, close to the churches, the main square, and all the other tourist attractions. There are bus stops close by to catch a bus to other parts of the city. Many small shops, big supermarkets, and the central market are close by.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are spacious and clean, but the floors are quite squeaky and the balcony doors rattle a lot. The beds are comfortable and sturdy. There are lockers in the rooms and you have to ask for a key downstairs to lock them. The keys are all mixed up in one container and they give you keys that don't lock any of the lockers in your room, and some of them might unlock a locker that is being used by someone else already. They are not the safest lockers. The lack of power points can also become a bit of an issue. Some of the rooms have small balconies and you get pretty good views from the rooms upstairs.
The bathrooms are decent size. They are a bit rundown, but they are clean most of the time. Once you figure out how to get the water just the right temperature, the showers are nice and warm with good water pressure. Unfortunately there is only one shared bathroom on the floor, so it can get very busy in the mornings.
Common Spaces
The reception is right at the end of the hallway when you enter. Just next to it is the main communal area with a few couches and tables. Right next to the front door is another area where you can chill out -- it also works as a sort of a tour agency.
The kitchen, which is located on the middle floor with an outdoor terrace, is very basic and small. It really fits only one person to cook at a time and it's not very well stocked with appliances and utensils. There are a few chairs around the kitchen counter that are a bit too short for it. On the terrace, there is a four-seater table with an umbrella and few chairs. You can eat there, but when it's raining or it is cold, you don't really want to spend too much time there. You could always walk downstairs and eat at the common area, though.
Summary
Overall, the hostel is good, but needs a bit of work. The building itself is beautiful and renovated, but it lacks a bit of atmosphere and few things need to be fixed around the place. The Wi-Fi works well downstairs, but it can be a bit temperamental on the other floors. The best part about the hostel is definitely its location.
