Graskop is the ideal and very popular base for exploring the Blyde River Canyon, Pilgrim's Rest, and the waterfalls on Sabie Road; Valley View Backpackers is the only backpacker hostel in town, but the new owner is keeping standards high.
Graskop is fifty kilometers west of Kruger Park; Valley View Backpackers is located on the western edge of this tiny town with sweeping views over the valley and hills beyond. It's about a ten-minute walk into town, where there is a supermarket, international ATMs, and many restaurants.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are four rooms in the main house, all South African family style, with one en suite. These contain either one single or double bed plus two bunks. In the back garden, wooden chalets provide the same and there is one six-bed dorm room. The dorm is en suite and the mattresses are thick, making for the most comfortable night's sleep. All beds have duvets and there's an extra blanket for the winter nights. Four lockers are provided for valuables, but use your own lock. The dorm is near the kitchen and sitting area, so it can be noisy. There is plenty of camping space in the back garden and next door in front of the owner's house, which also doubles as the parking area. The shared toilets are all immaculately clean and there is twenty-four-hour hot water.
The main house contains a sitting room with three couches, a TV for DVDs only, a small book exchange, and board games. There is no food available here, but the spotless kitchen is for guests to use and is well equipped with a kettle, toaster, microwave, and both electric and gas stoves; there is an undercover sitting area outside with long tables and a BBQ. Should you want to eat out, restaurants are a ten-minute walk away in Graskop center. There is free tea and coffee all day and Wi-Fi is available for a small, one-off charge. Laundry can be done here for a small charge and there is a tumble dryer for rainy days.
Although this is the only backpacker choice in Graskop, this is a fantastically run place, and deservedly very popular, so it would pay to book ahead here. If the great views across the valley aren't enough, the owner is friendly, helpful, and has many ideas for hiking and biking in the area (mountain bikes can be hired here). The owner lives next door, and is always on hand for help and advice. The place is kept spotless and there are maps and posters of the flora and fauna dotted all round the house. This place is wonderful.

Nice, clean, and beautiful hostel
We planned to stay 2 nights but we enjoyed it so much that we stayed there for 6 nights. Andre, Lizzy, and Lily are very friendly and helpful. Beautiful area with lots to do.

Graskop Valley View Hostel is very friendly and clean. The owners, a couple, are charming and helpful. There isn't much of a social atmosphere, however, it is more for relaxing since it is somewhat isolated. It is a well appointed hostel serving the needs of backpackers with internet access, fax service, luggage storage, security lockers, bike rental, and washers and dryers. There is also a small, friendly bar and restaurant onsite with very good food from local sources. Included in the price is bed linen but towels are an additional cost.
The hostel, easy to find since Graskop is a village, is in a lovely area and is very safe, but is not serviced by public transportation. There is ample, free parking for guests with cars (as most people staying here do). The hostel is a five-minute walk from the center of the small town. Graskop is a great location -- excellent for mountain biking and hiking -- and the jumping off point for the Blythe River Canyon and its activities. There are delicious pancake restaurants in the town. Tours to the animal parks can be arranged.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are very clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. The climate in Graskop is mild and fans keep things comfortable (there is no air conditioning). There is an eight-bed mixed dorm with ensuite and twin rooms with ensuite or with shared bathrooms.
There is a clean kitchen for guest use that is well supplied and a nice common room with a library and a television. The general atmosphere is relaxed rather than a party place for meeting people. There is also a porch and a BBQ area for cooking and relaxing (in addition to guest use of the BBQ, the owners host a regular BBQ for hostel guests). It is a non-smoking hostel and children are welcome.
This hostel is terrific for the value, beautiful location, clean rooms, friendly owners, and facilities. The tour desk is very good at recommending activities and arranging tours and car hire for travelers. There is also secure bike storage.

Friendly and extremely helpful manager who really knows the area. Small, clean and quiet place.
Great place to stay. It had a great view, it was clean, quiet, and there were amazing lightning storms!
ValleyView Hostel is located on the west side of the village Graskop, 5 minutes from centre of town. This village is on the way to the panoramic route along the Blyde River Canyon and is surrounded by mountains, forest and African bush. An ideal place for hiking or mountain biking through forest, grassland and along plenty of waterfalls.
ValleyView is a loungable, jazzy place where you can relax after being exhausted from your travels, activities and all the impressions. In a relaxed atmosphere we can offer you a nice bed, some good food and a small bar for a couple of drinks. Ideal to reload for another day of great experiences!
If you need some more information, we gladly inform you about the plenty of possibilities in this magnificent area. It's a nice place were you can exchange experiences with fellow travelers. To keep in touch with all your friends there is an Internet facility.
We rent out mountain bikes so you can find your own way through Graskop, the forest and maybe the panoramic route. We have a lot of information about the hiking, mountain bike trails and other things to do in the area. We do lunch tours to one of the plenty waterfalls where you can go for a refreshing dive. You can also book a tour to Kruger National Park, Swaziland or one of the cities in the area.
We have bunk beds, double rooms, en suite rooms, self-catering chalets and space for tents.
