Pension Lodge

The Review

Despite its name, Pension Lodge is not a place for the old folks.

The Location

The first thing we notice as we walk onto the property is the pool -- it's clean and inviting in the Cambodian heat. The staff member greeted us outside the gate and welcomed us into the reception area.

Note that a maps app does not have the correct location of this hostel; we wasted a lot of time in the blistering heat, trying to find the hostel. Once we knew the correct location, it was pretty easy to find, with large signage outside in the street. There are many cheap street-food stalls along the road, as well as fruit vendors. It's a short to cross the bridge and get into town.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our ten-bed dorm is on the first floor; we have no key for the room, so there is no security for our belongings. Once you open the dorm room door, there are a few steps down into the room. It's a large room with plenty of space; underneath the bed are storage areas for luggage, although they don't lock, unless you happen to have a big lock with you (the usual small locker padlocks are too small). There are small lockers down in the reception area. Each bed is equipped with two electrical sockets and a reading light. The beds have sturdy, wooden frames and the mattress and pillows are comfortable. The little blanket is unnecessary, as the air conditioner is on fan only. The room is hot and stuffy; the receptionist fiddled with it and pronounced it fixed, but it wasn't. There is only one fan in the room, which is totally insufficient for a room this size.

The bathroom is en suite and consists of one toilet, one shower, and one hand basin. It is a disgrace -- it's dirty, and needs repair. There is also nowhere to put soap or shampoo once in the shower. There is a railing, but you have to be careful how you shower, so as not to wet your clean clothes and towel. It's also not very soundproof, so any goings on in the bathroom is heard in the bedroom. There are more showers and toilets on the ground floor, but they are terrible and we refuse to use them.

Common Spaces

The reception area has a large, heavy, wooden table and chairs, which look and feel uncomfortable. On the first floor, at the end of the corridor, there are the same large, heavy, wooden table and chairs. There is a little balcony with a coffee table and two wicker chairs. Upstairs on the second floor is a social area with wicker chairs and cushions. It's a little cafe area where you can order a bit of food and drink a beer. The lady who runs this rooftop bar is happy, friendly, and will have an interesting chat with you. Outside at the pool is a good social area for guests. The staff offer travel advice and arrange tours to the temples; they're all very friendly and eager to help. The Wi-Fi is terrible, and we are not able to do any computer work with it.

The photos on the booking sites are misleading and not representative of what you get. The place could do with some revamping and refurbishing in some areas, and we find there are just too many negatives regarding this hostel to vote it as good value for money. For the same price, you could get better value for money in the vicinity.
