Got cancelled because the hostel is closed due to covid without refund
I booked with hostelsclub, they changed my booking as a "free upgrade" to another hostel because they were closed. I didn't want that new hostel so I asked them for the refund.
They never did a refund. Never again.
Great having free food most of the day, but what's with the millenials
The rooms were comfortable and airy, and having a shower in the room was much appreciated. I've been traveling in hostels for 40 years, and it worries me that hostel goers of the present generation do not speak to each other!? 10 people can eat in silence, and no one ever said hi (except for staff, who were welcoming) in the 3 nights I spent there to anyone (not just me, otherwise I would postulate agism, which is not the case). Thank god there were a few non-millenials for some social interaction.
Of all the hostels to stay in Florence, few will have as much to offer as Hostel Gallo D'oro. For a great price, the hostel will provide several free perks.
The Location
The benefit of the location is that Florence is a smaller European city. The hostel is just over one-and-a-half kilometers from the Firenze SMN (Santa Maria Novella) Train Station; it's possible to walk the entire length of the city in an hour. The Accademia Gallery (home of the Statue of David) is a short, ten-minute walk from the hostel. A fifteen-minute walk will get you to the Duomo. If you don't want to walk to the city center, you can find restaurants and bars just a few blocks from the hostel. The hostel is located along a quiet street with a bus stop right across the street from the front door. When walking into the building, stay to the right side and go up to the second floor.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms and bathrooms have never appeared dirty. The cleaning staff does an incredible job keeping up with everything. As a bonus, the bed sheets are cleaned and made on a daily basis. Some of the dorms include private showers. The rooms include large, lockable cabinets that are big enough to hang shirts on a hanger. The toilets and showers are separated into two different rooms.
Common Spaces
The common room is setup very nicely. There are plenty of tables and chairs with a large television. On the counter are two different drink machines, which can be accessed anytime. One machine will provide water and juice. The other will provide milk, coffee, cappuccino, and espresso. As a huge perk to staying at this hostel, food is free and is provided for each meal of the day. The common area is open twenty-four/seven and is a great place to meet other travelers.
Summary
For a great price, this hostel will also allow people to save a great amount of money with all the free services. The breakfast includes bread, pastries, cereal, and deli meats. The lunch and dinner meals are usually served after 2 p.m. The meal usually includes a salad, pasta, and a sandwich with meats and cheeses. Backpackers on a budget will greatly appreciate the free food. This hostel provides the best situation. It's located near the busy city center but on a much quieter street, it's easy to access public transportation, and its price is on the lower side for hostels in Florence.
Nice stay
Stayed in the all female room with connected bathroom which was convenient. Breakfast was balanced with sandwiches, yoghurts, juices and coffee -- a good change from BBs serving mainly sweet stuffs. Staffs were friendly and helpful.
Great location
Very helpful and friendly staff. As we're a retired couple it was fun to speak with young people. The breakfast is the best!
Friendly, cosy, relaxed, welcoming.
Stayed here in August; I was traveling alone as an older woman, so wanted somewhere that felt secure. Ostello Gallo D'Oro is family run and extremely welcoming; it's easy to feel quickly at home. Rooms were clean and comfortable, some with little balconies. The breakfasts were amazing, with fruit, fruit salad, cereals, home made (overnight, on the premises, so very fresh) mini pizzas and savory rolls, tarts, pastries and croissants. Hot drinks either from a machine or made to your individual specification by the staff -- wonderful latte! There was always cold water, juice, and some sort of snack (fruit, cake, pastries) available free, for afternoons or evenings if you neede to go back for a rest from the heat or sightseeing. Staff were very helpful with maps, information, phoning the Uffizi to book entrance tickets. August 15th was a public holiday, so the staff and their friends put on a free party for anyone at the hostel and their friends, with food, drink, music and good conversation on the rooftop terrace of their sister hostel a few doors away. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and it added greatly to my enjoyment of my visit to Florence.
Super nice staff and great breakfast
We only stayed a night but found the staff super helpful and yummy breakfast too. A little walk from the city center. Beds were not too comfortable, definitely more hostel style. But overall, good experience.
Check your rate
Upon arrival at the Ostello Gallo D'Oro the traveler feels welcome. No rush at the check in and you are greeted with a small bottle of water or a cup of coffee, guess depending how tired you look. It is a real hostel, with kitchen, common room, breakfast and nice, clean rooms. The owners are very helpful, even make phone calls for you to set your reservation for the next hostel up or make sure you will have a table at the restaurant you want to have dinner. Free internet and wifi and a lot of other convenient things are there. You ask why I don't give 5 stars? Answer, I stayed at a 5 bed dorm with bathroom inside and paid 25 (April 08). An Italian who called but never showed up was told he would pay 27 and the American student, sharing the same room at the same time with me paid 30 a night! The price policy in Italian hostels amazes me every time. Check what you pay when you stay there!!
