Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Wollongong YHA Hostel - Keiraview is an excellent hostel for quiet, undisturbed accommodation with it's hotel-reminiscent design.

The Location

Located well within walking distance from the local train station and only a few blocks from the local free bus loop, this hostel has a great, central location that doesn't compromise with noise or security. Parking is available beneath the hostel in a garage-style facility. Without knowing what to look for, the hostel is a bit on the inconspicuous side, as the main entry way is via the hostel's courtyard. Plenty of dining options are available nearby, with restaurants lining the streets within blocks of the hostel, and grocery stores also located within an eight-minute walk.

Rooms and Bathrooms

This hostel also serves as student accommodation and as a hotel, and the design is indicative to this fact. Dormitories are organized such that several rooms are accessed via their own shared kitchen, while each room requires individual key-card access. The hostel and student accommodation is located on the ground floor, while the hotel rooms are accessed via the lift to the upper levels.

Rooms are kept very clean by staff, and beds are provided with two sheets and a blanket. Rooms are complete with BYO-pad-lock lockers which are uncommonly spacious. There is one electrical outlet for each person in the room, however, two of these outlets were curiously located on the ceiling adjacent to one bunk, which the other two were located near the floor adjacent to the other.

Two bathrooms are shared amongst several dormitories, although this seemed sufficient given the nature of the bathrooms. Each bathroom provided enough room for easy bathing, with the accessibility bathroom being particularly large. In addition to providing a bathtub, the shower in this larger restroom was designed as a free, unbordered shower-head upon the bathroom's tile flooring, creating a bit of a problem with slippery floors throughout the restroom. This was not a problem with the smaller bathroom, as the shower in this room was fully enclosed.

Common Spaces

As described above, all rooms are accessed through their respective kitchen, which serves as a common dining room as well. The kitchen has a stove with four burners as well as mini fridges and pantry space allocated according to room. While admittedly lacking a bit of counter space and such appliances such as an oven, this kitchen is supplied with most cookware, glassware, and cutlery that you may require.

The courtyard is complete with barbecue grills and an outdoor dining table, although mosquitos seemed to deter most visitors from utilizing this area. An air-conditioned TV room, complete with couches and a wireless internet router, proved to be a much more popular lounge amongst all travelers. The combination of the open-air courtyard and the abundance of windows made these areas particularly appealing to linger in, although it was observed that the subdued atmosphere of this hostel did not facilitate much socializing amongst visitors.

Summary

With amenities such as a fully-equipped kitchen and inexpensive laundry facilities, Wollongong YHA Hostel - Keiraview is an ideal crash-pad for solo travelers and groups alike. Cleanliness, security, and quiet rest are the real benefits offered by this hostel, and proximity to the heart of Wollongong is hard to beat.

HI - Wollongong YHA Hostel - Keiraview is a nice hostel, with a good atmosphere -- it feels more like a small hotel than a hostel. In fact, the courtyard is beautiful, with palm trees and a gorgeous mural on the wall. Don’t expect a party hostel, as some international students and families make this place their home. However, there are still enough backpackers coming in and out during summer to make this place interesting. It is a university town, so the nightlife outside the hostel, in the local bars and clubs can always be counted on. The Location Keiraview is located right downtown Wollongong, near the mall and all the central shops and restaurants. It is also about twenty minutes' walk to the beautiful beach. The beach in Wollongong is great, not too crowded -- and the only beach skydive in Australia is offered on Wollongong’s gorgeous beaches. Wollongong is located an hour south of Sydney by car, and an hour and a half by train. It is a great spot, with skydiving, great surf, and lovely beaches. Rooms and Bathrooms This hostel offers private ensuite rooms that resemble small hotel rooms, and dorm rooms. Most of the dorm rooms have single beds rather than bunk beds, which is always a plus. The bathroom is shared in the dorm rooms and is big and always clean. Common Spaces There is a large comfortable lounge room with a large TV, access to internet (at an additional cost), and vending machines. There is also a clean, communal kitchen with your own mini fridge for your dorm room; stoves; ovens; and microwaves for preparing a cheap meal or leftovers. Summary Overall, this is a good hostel for a quiet stay in Wollongong. It's clean and comfortable and the staff are helpful. They lock the front at night, so you can be sure that you're safe, but you can still go in and out with your key. It also looks great, with the large courtyard where you can sit back and drink a beer or hang out with your friends. We would stay here again.

Nice hostel, clean and safe. I would have liked a separate light for every bed, but I would come here again.
