Nice place but thieves, small kitchen, and not close to the beach
The good -- rooms are clean, comfortable, and the majority of staff are helpful. There is a nice rooftop terrace with a beautiful view which makes this worthwhile alone. The bad -- It is not very close to the beach, especially compared to the other local hostels. A couple of the staff are miserable and rude and misinformed. The kitchen is tiny, dangerously tiny, absolutely pathetic for a hostel of this size. There are food thieves too -- I had 4 items stolen in 2 days. This is partially due to the hostels 'no bags in the fridge' policy meaning all your food is on display in a tupperware tray. They say they are serious about theft but nothing was done, I was told 'this is what some backpackers are like'. The kitchen is poorly equipped too. There are a lot of families staying here which is a bit strange for a YOUTH hostel. I don't know why parents would bring their kids to a backpackers hostel. As a result there is no party atmosphere and you don't really meet people here like you do in other hostels. Although the rooftop terrace is nice, the courtyard is directly below you and any calm sound of the waves in the distance is canceled out by the annoying table tennis being played constantly. Although the bathrooms are cleaned daily sadly they are often smelling of urine, get dirty again quickly and sometimes there is no hot water and the toilets do not always work properly. There are no free breakfasts, internet, or vouchers of any kind. Stay here if you want to chill out, read a book, and are not bothered about cooking or food going missing. Do not stay here if you want to meet people, party, be close to the beach, or cook. Also, Bondi Beach as a whole is VERY expensive. Public transport is poor (and the drivers unfriendly), if you want a cheap shop, meal, or a decent night out (most of Bondi shuts down at midnight) you will need to go to the city or Kings Cross.
HI - Sydney - Bondi Beachouse YHA Hostel is an adequate hostel to stay at if you would rather be closer to the beach and nightlife of Bondi Beach rather than the center of Sydney, or if you just want to get away from the big city for a few days. It is a clean, relatively social hostel that attracts a diverse group of backpackers looking for a laid-back good time. The staff we encountered were very friendly and gave great local advice. As long as you know what to expect, you won't be disappointed at this hostel. The Location The hostel is relatively easy to find, but takes a bit of street savvy. From Bondi Junction central bus station, take the 381 bus to Fletcher Street, and it's a two-minute walk. From central Sydney, take the 380 bus to Bondi Beach and get off at Denham Street/Bondi Road, and it is about a ten-minute walk, or switch at Bondi Junction to the 381 bus. There are street signs labeled YHA pointing you in the right direction if you have a keen attention to detail. One potential drawback of the hostel is that it is actually in a quiet neighborhood about a fifteen-minute walk down Bondi Road from the center of Bondi, so it is not right on the beach or in the thick of the nightlife. However, the hostel is only two blocks from Marks Park, which has access to the gorgeous Bondi-Coogee Coastal Walk, and is a picturesque way to walk to Bondi Beach. This wouldn't be the most convenient place to stay if you plan on spending a lot of time in central Sydney, as it is about a half-hour bus ride each way that will set you back. Rooms and Bathrooms The dorm rooms are segregated into male and female dorms, no mixed dorms; however, double rooms are available. Dorm rooms have four beds (two bunks) and container in-room lockers. You need your own lock, or you can purchase one at reception. The room door locks are with a magnetic stripe key card, which is a plus in terms of security, because if you lose it, it is not labeled with the room number. The biggest drawback to the rooms are that they are dark and poorly lit, and not much natural light enters the room, which gives it a bit of a damp feeling. The carpets and sheets are dark as well, so the room is not particularly bright or welcoming, albeit clean and adequate. The bathrooms are very clean and appeared to be cleaned frequently. The showers are especially clean, and each stall has enough room to change and hooks and a bench for clothing/towels. The water pressure of the shower is good and hot water is easy to come by. The bathroom is never crowded, even at peak times, which is a huge plus. Common Spaces The hostel has a large number of common spaces for socializing with other guests, relaxing, or hanging out on a rainy day. There is a large, clean kitchen with a very large seating area; game room with ping pong and chess; two TV rooms (smoking and nonsmoking); and the best common area is the roof deck, with lounge chairs and an excellent view of Bondi Beach. It also has a small, functional internet room as well as laundry facilities. Being away from the main drag of Bondi Beach, this is not a party hostel. The backpackers are a mix of beach bums and partygoers, so it has a laid-back social feel. If you want to meet people, there's certainly no shortage of friendly folks milling about the hostel, but you won't have trouble sleeping at night either as the common areas close at 10 p.m. The reception area also has a plethora of information about activities where you can meet other travelers, such as surfing, kayaking, or even in-house activities like BBQ and pizza nights. Summary Overall, this is a great hostel if you don't plan on spending too much time in your room and don't mind a short walk to the center of town. After all, you are in Bondi Beach, where there is so much to do -- sunbathing, surfing, shopping, nightlife, and the coastal walk is a must. It's a relatively quiet place where you can still socialize if you choose. The reception is open late (midnight!) and can provide you with anything you need, from earplugs to dinner recommendations. It's basically got everything you need in a hostel!

Average hostel, bad bathrooms
I stayed in a six-bed dorm, which was pretty cramped, however it was clean and did have lockers for your stuff. One very bad thing about this hostel is the bathrooms which are all unisex there is only two showers per floor and the toilet are in the same room as the shower so if two people are in the shower then you can't go to the toilet. It is very cramped and you normally have to queue to brush your teeth as shared between these toilets is only one sink. The bathroom didn't have any windows or fans, so as you can image it smelt very very bad and you had to put up with this smell while you was showering! It is not near any beach, which is not the impression which you are given, you are on a street which has an overpriced cafe and a shop which doesn't stay open late. However there are very cheap buses just outside the yha which run very frequently to bondi beach and bondi junction and they run all night. The hostel is average as hostels come, but i would say its more suitable for people who plan to stay there a long time (who don't have a sense of smell), or planning to work as the access to places is quite convenient.
Booked in for a undetermined amount of time. Stayed for three months. I'm pretty picky when it comes to hostels but liked this place a lot. The atmosphere was really good. The living room/dining area is a great place to make new friends and play drinking games, or just snooze on the couches on a lazy afternoon or hungover morning. Had many good times hanging out in the courtyard playing ping pong, and on the rooftop with an awesome view facing south of Coogee unfortunately the spa is gone though -- think it broke down as well as issues with neighbours maybe? Two lounge rooms in the basement. One is non smoking and one is smoking -- a bit stinky in the smoking one but good if you wanna chill out watching movies and have some smokes or late night nookie. Bathrooms are a short walk through the hall depending on what side of the building you're in, and the ones on the second and third floor have completely private toilets and showers, which can be convenient. It's a bit of an old building so there are a few minor maintenance issues, but it's well decorated and they keep it clean. You can smell the sani spray they use in the rooms if you're walking through the corridor in the morning. If you leave your crap all over the floor they might not pay much attention to cleaning your room but if you make the effort to keep it neat they will too. Staff was always awesome. really felt like home after a while.
This hostel was a mess! The staff was really bad and you could not really trust them. The rooms were stinking and filthy, and it was really far to go to the toilets, that was stinking urine. Not as close to the beach as they promised either. Dont go here!
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Bondi Beachouse YHA and were really disappointed -- so much so that we changed our two-night booking for one night and escaped as soon as we could! The hostel was rammed -- and the kitchen was tiny -- we didn't even attempt to cook in here. Our six-bed dorm looked like a war-zone and was filthy -- it hadn't been cleaned for ages. Plus, we chucked some random girl out because she was getting down and dirty with some guy! Gross. The bathrooms were miles away and were also really dirty -- the corridors stank of smoke. Oh, and there's no rooftop pool -- that's a myth! Our advice? Save your money and go somewhere else -- YHA have really let us down.
