Old Vic Travellers Inn Nelspruit

The Hostelz.com Review

Old Vic Travellers Inn Nelspruit -- this long-running place, set in beautiful and peaceful surroundings outside Nelspruit, is a welcome and comfortable stay en route to various trips around the area, including the world-famous Kruger National Park.

The Location

Like one of the other three backpacker options in Nelspruit, it's a little inconveniently situated if you don't have your own wheels. It's a stiff, uphill foot-slog of almost an hour to get here from the city center and there is very little around this residential area except a bit of peace and quiet.

Rooms and Bathrooms

In a secure, gated compound, the Old Vic is a really snug little place. There's lots of accommodations, both in the main house and in the annex alongside. The dorm in the annex has six bunk beds with duvet bedding and very comfortable mattresses, and it also shares a common toilet and shower. There are no tables for luggage, but there is a slightly battered, old wardrobe for storage. There are a couple of power points in the dorm, but you'll have to pull out some of the beds to find them! All is very clean and the common shower and toilet likewise. All bedrooms are fan-cooled. There is twenty-four-hour hot water and the free Wi-Fi signal just about reaches as far as the dorm. If you're looking for a bit of pampering, they also have an onsite beauty salon and massage therapist.

Common Spaces

There are several little nooks and crannies within the house, which is furnished with armchairs and sofas. There are also two sitting areas in the back garden -- one under shade, the other open to the elements. This is also where the swimming pool is located, often filled with sun loungers. A wooden balcony that extends from the reception has tables and chairs for dining, though there is limited food here. The food choices are confined to a few expensive breakfast options and an expensive dinner on demand. Other than that, there are several leaflets advertising food deliveries of the fast food variety. It really is a long walk into town, but there is a small grocery store just ten minutes uphill if you are willing to walk. Two well-equipped, self-catering kitchens are available; there is free tea and coffee from 7 until 10 a.m. A small bar sits just around the corner from the reception. and all rubbish is recycled at Old Vic.

This is a very nice and relaxed place to stay, as it's in a quiet part of town; this can also be an inconvenience if you don't have your own transportation. Everything in the house is well maintained and there are a variety of tour options from the reception. This place has a nice atmosphere and is well recommended.

Save yourself the hassle -- book elsewhere!
There is no doubt that this hostel is very picturesque. It has a beautiful pool area, raised decking with comfy sofas and the rooms and kitchen are to hostel standards. I am afraid though that this is where it ends. This hostel demands full payment before arrival and will not under any circumstances issue a refund! They do not offer a secure payment system such as paypal and wanted us to email our credit card details to them! The owners run two hostels from the same site so even though you book the Old Vic you may find yourself in the cheaper "Crazy Kangaroos" next door. When we arrived we where told we had been 'upgraded' to The Old Vic which was very frustrating as, to our knowledge, this is what we had already booked. Our room did not have a lock. This is something that is very basic and essential in a hostel! The toilets and shower are situated right next to the office and you have to walk through the communal area and check in area to get to them. They do not allow you to bring your own alcohol and insist you buy from their 'bar' at extortionate prices (think London pub prices). This hostel does not offer collection from Nelspruit as advertised. In fact, this was the only reason we booked with them. They are situated about 10 min drive outside Nelspruit so you'll have to take a taxi costing around R70. Before arrival we had arranged to be taken out to the airport to collect our hire car. When we got to the hostel we where told it would cost us R300 for the 15 min trip. This is clearly taking advantage of international travelers whom the owners seem to believe are loaded as R300 is a lot of money. Furthermore, we had to wait an hour to leave as the owner had things to do beforehand. The journey there and back would have actually cost them no more than R50 in time and fuel. They do not offer maps of the local area. The hostel is situated in the suburbs and unfortunately we where driving around for over an hour trying to find our way back. There are no signposts on main roads and nothing to direct you at all. It was honestly like being trapped in a maze. Parking is very limited. If you are the first car you will be parked in! This clearly does not suit travelers that need to be away early in the morning. We would never return to this hostel and cannot recommend it but hope that this review will help fellow travelers make an informed decision. We posted the same review on another website to which the owners commented that they knew we would leave a negative review after our stay. Why let your guests leave unhappy with the service provided instead of trying to rectify the problems?

I had the most wonderful time staying with Dave and Bella. They are the nicest people I have ever met and they made my time there extra special. They also took me on a trip to Kruger Park and Blyde Canyon, which was absolutely fantastic. Well recommended! :)
