Don’t be deceived by the name -- My Studio Hotel is a hostel, and beds are in shared dormitories.
The Location
The hostel is close to the river and near some big shopping malls with the convention centre and plenty of places to eat and drink close by.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is spread over four floors. The large shared dormitories are on floors two and three. Beds are the "pod" design, so that you get some privacy. Each pod has a roller blind, a charging socket, and a light. They also have a little pull-down shelf, so that you can work with a laptop or watch a film.
The mattresses are of good quality as is the bottom sheet and pillowcase. No top sheet is supplied, but you will get a blanket. Towels are also supplied and you will be issued with a complimentary bottle of water on arrival. Lockers are below the beds; they are not big enough to take a rucksack, but are ample for your valuables and are accessed with an electronic keycard.
There is one toilet/shower room on each floor with a hand basin outside the room. These rooms are small, however on the top floor is an enormous bathroom -- up here, the toilets and shared shower cubicles are massive. There is plenty of room to spread out and to hang your belongings and there is also a long wall of hand basins here too.
Facilities are kept spotlessly clean, but whilst showers all have soap dispensers, hand basins have paper towels and toilets have toilet paper, these often run out and are not always replaced quickly.
Common Spaces
There is a small area for seating within each dorm, but the main social area is on the ground floor. Hard stools sit up at long, high benches. There are a couple of electric outlets, although the staff will run an extension cable if it is busy. A simple breakfast of toast and jam is provided; tea, coffee, and drinking water are available all day. You can also buy snacks and "cook" instant noodles should you be hungry. A TV is on the wall and great background music is often playing and Wi-Fi is good throughout the hostel.
Summary
The hostel is clean and functional, but lacks atmosphere. Staff are not very knowledgeable about the local area or what to visit -- to the extent that they do not even have maps to give out. Many students seem to use the hostel as a base plus conference attendees and sometimes they can be inconsiderate during the night time. Maybe it's because there is a feeling of privacy due to the good-quality roller blinds, but many would take late-night phone calls in bed in the dormitory. Night staff would often move around noisily too -- emptying rubbish bins at 11 p.m.! Facility-wise, this is a good hostel in a good location, but it could be made a lot cosier and welcoming for foreign travelers and backpackers.
