Myrthengasse Hostel Vienna

The Review

Myrthengasse Hostel Vienna is a quiet hostel with a great location. It is recommended for families and maybe groups of friends, however it's not a very social hostel, so it's less appealing to lone travelers who want to meet lots of new people. It's also worth pointing out that the hostel requires membership with the International Youth Hostel Association. If you do not have the membership, a per-person, per-night supplement is payable.

The Location

Myrthengasse Hostel is located in the Neubau district, in a quiet street right off Burggasse that is parallel to Mariahilfer, which is known as shopping heaven. During the day and throughout the evening, the surrounding streets filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants are bustling, but at night it’s very peaceful. The hostel is quite central, about ten minutes on foot to Museum Quarter and even less to Mariahilfer Straβe. There are two underground stations nearby (ten-minute walk), covering three out of five U-Bahn lines that run all day (and all night at the weekends) -- Volkstheater (U2 and U3) and Burggasse-Stadthalle (U6). You can reach the two remaining lines (U1 and U4) by taking the U2 to Karlsplatz station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are quite spacious. The bunk beds are accompanied by a table, some chairs and a lot of storage space (closets that can be locked using a padlock -- you have to bring your own). There is a bed light above each of the beds, but there are next to none electrical sockets in the room (two or three in total, none of them next to the beds). The beds are a bit on the harder side, so if you’re sensitive about that, you might want to keep it in mind. Bedsheets are provided but it’s worth noting that you have to make your own bed, especially if you arrive later in the evening. You are also asked to strip the sheets before you leave so you will have to wake up a few minutes earlier. Towels are not provided.

Showers and toilets are in the hall, there are two showers and three toilets per five rooms. Neither showers nor toilets are anything special, but they are clean and supplied with toilet paper and hand wash.

Common Spaces

Common spaces are scattered around the ground floor and the basement. Usually they’re not very crowded as there are a lot of families staying in the hostel. There is no hostel kitchen where you could cook something, but there is a restaurant in the building in which they serve breakfast (included in the price!) and other meals later in the day (to be paid). There is a nice outdoor space atrium, where you can eat your breakfast or just hang out. However, it is meant for smokers so if smoke bothers you, that is something to note.

This is a very big hostel (one-hundred-plus beds) so it can be pretty impersonal. It is full of families and not exactly a party hostel. However, there is no lockout and every traveler gets an electronic key to access the building’s front entrance and their room. Everything considered, the hostel is nothing exceptional. However, it is very clean; on the cheaper side; breakfast is included; and the location is, in our opinion, ideal. This hostel is recommended for anyone who prioritizes location over everything else.

The staff is not friendly
the location is great, the hostel is ok, just the rooms are so far from the reception, the bath is kind of dirty, the breakfast is ok. but the staff are unfriendly -- they are angry the whole time; just 2 guy there were nice.

So, I've been to two other HI hostels and they were phenomenal. This one fell so short of the bar I'm not even sure it has hit bottom yet. The directions they emailed to me to get here from the train station were completely wrong; they told me to take a nonexistent tram. Then, while the girl at reception was very nice, she wasn't particularly helpful in certain regards. Also, actually finding the street the hostel is on was interesting, as was the 20 minute walk to stephansplatz, rather than the seven minute walk they advertise. I have yet to see the courtyard, the wifi only exists in the two common rooms and it's only good in the main one, the breakfast is included but it does leave something to be desired and you're not allowed to take food away from the buffet. If you don't mind clambering like a chimp to get into the bunks, which have nothing to grab onto, then it's fine. I did not enjoy my stay here.

Easily approachable. It was very clean and good value for money. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was plentiful, with a good choice and all-you-can-eat. It was hot though when we visited and since there are no fans sometimes it got a little uncomfortable at night. I would recommend this hostel to my friends and would choose to stay here again.
Very good
One of the good hostels I saw, adequate breakfast, comfortable beds, everything is clean. The bedrooms are spread over several buildings so you may have to walk many times. Security is ok. I love the big lockers in the rooms, they have many of them. And you can even lock them, they also sell padlocks. The location is close to the city and not very loud. There is only one room to meet people, so it is not really a party hostel. I love Vienna!
This one was ok except the noises at night and the breakfast. You are only allowed to take two bread rolls and for juice you had to pay seperately. Bad luck, because tea and coffee did not taste that good. Well, the rooms were fine, clean, and we had a great shower in our room. The fee for using the internet was a joke -- much too expensive for this extremely slow connection. I also wonder why it is a problem for the staff to arrive at around 12 in the evening -- this hostel has a twenty-four hour check-in! Anyway, the price itself was ok and traffic connections very good, too.
The hostel was nice enough. The rooms are big enough and the furniture seems fairly new. The meals were also very good. The only complaint I had was the temperature in the rooms. It was a hot night in Vienna and the windows would only open a crack, so we had no breeze.
Clean dorm rooms, a decent price, and it's super-safe. I'd recommend it.
