The Frame Guesthouse

The Review

The Frame Guesthouse is a medium-sized hostel with a choice of mixed or female dorms with shared bathrooms, or private rooms with either en suite or shared bathroom facilities. One of the mixed dorm rooms even has double beds -- it's ideal for couples. The property is spread over three floors, and rooms are air conditioned and inclusive of free breakfast, towel, and Wi-Fi. Laundry services are available.

The Location

The hostel is located a couple minutes' walk from Love Lane, in close proximity to Little India and by many bars, shops, and restaurants. The walk from the jetty or komtar bus station is pretty much equidistant at about a fifteen-minute walk each.

The hostel is an ex-framemakers' shop building and has a rustic feel, with bare concrete making up most of the floors and walls. It is kept clean throughout. The front door is locked each evening at midnight, with access only by ringing a bell to be personally let in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms have bunk beds with very comfortable mattresses, a small shelf, power point, and light for each. You are provided with a towel. You are given a key for the room and also for a locker, which is large enough in which to put a backpack.

There are two shared bathroom areas, one per floor. Upstairs, there are three showers and two toilets; downstairs has two showers and two toilets. The showers each have a toiletry shelf, featuring complimentary shampoo/body wash, and two hooks. They are clean, although they are a bit tight for space when you're changing clothes. The sink spaces are good and hand wash is provided.

Common Spaces

Downstairs has a small amount of seating by the reception, then behind this in the kitchen area you will find many more chairs and tables, along with free tea and coffee (including real milk) and drinking water all day. A toast and fruit breakfast is provided here each morning. The small patio area outside to the rear also features a table and chairs. A room just off the kitchen area hosts a sofa in front of a large TV, along with DVD player, selection of DVDs, and a guitar. Directly above this room on the first floor you will find another common room, this one hosting a reasonable book exchange. Next to this, there is another space with a couple of chairs and even a fridge for guest use. The atmosphere is pleasant and quiet yet social, with backpacker clientele.

From being offered fresh fruit on check-in to free gin in the evenings, this hostel goes above and beyond for its guests. It is clean, very comfortable, and well located, and provides not only a place to sleep, but also a place to relax and make friends.
