Ambergis Caye has little to offer in terms of hostels, and Hostel La Vista might be the best of the bunch, with spacious settings and a relaxed atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, nice owners, and an iguana-filled garden.
The Location
The location is convenient on first sight. It's in the middle of town, an easy walk to either ferry pier and even to the air strip, with everything one might need (stores, bars, restaurants) basically right next door. It's also a stone's throw away from the beach but it's not the kind of beach for lazing around or swimming. The hostel itself has a garden setting with hammocks. The garden could use a little more love, though. The disadvantage of the location shows itself come night time. There is a night club right next to it, which blasts loud music until the early morning hours, which definitely affects the whole hostel and can't even be overheard with ear plugs.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has privates and dorm rooms. The dorms are like the privates but with more beds in them. Each room has a private bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower and there are no common bathrooms outside the rooms. En suite bathrooms might seem convenient, but unfortunately they have no ventilation and thus odor builds up in them and eventually spreads out through the whole room. The bunk beds are the half-stable wooden kind and mattresses are pretty old and saggy but ok for a night or two. At night an air conditioner kicks in. Rooms and bathrooms do get cleaned daily, but still seem to never be fully swish as patina has set in.
Common Spaces
There is a little common space under a roof outside on the ground floor and a third-floor lounge with great sea views. Plus, there's the garden with some hammocks and chairs. There's a book share and a convenient little corner to leave stuff not needed anymore and pick up what's useful. Wi-Fi is free but slow and fickle. It's best used before the island awakens in the morning. There is also an outdoor kitchen on the ground floor, which folks who take issue with low hygiene might not want to access. In the evenings, there quite often are nice gatherings of the hostel guests playing games or making music or just chit-chatting.
Summary
There are definitely nicer hostels on this earth, but not in Belize. For Belize standards, this is a pretty decent stay with a good atmosphere. The only reason to really stay away is the noise level from the nightclub next doors.
