Good food and people
Quiet and helpful.
If you are looking for a nice and a bit crazy place to stay, HI - Auberge de Riviere du Loup Hostel is the place to be. It is open all year around and sleeps in about seventy people.
The Location
The hostel is situated at the main street Hotel De Ville in the middle of downtown Riviere Du Loop just about three hours by car from Quebec City. It's a Victorian house that feels like home. The bus stops about three kilometers away from the hostel -- so you can either walk or phone the hostel and they will pick you up. There are bars, restaurants, shops, clubs nearby. To the beach its about three kilometers but you can rent a bike from the hostel to get around, to go to the waterfall where you can hike in woods or cycle just along the waterfront.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms, the kitchen, and the bathrooms are very clean and tidy but the showers are a bit small so moving around and getting dressed is a bit difficult. The dorms come with free bedding and have enough space to get all your belongings stored. They allow camping in the backyard for a reduced rate. Security seems to be very good with a lock for the door to the hostel and separate locks for all the rooms.
Common Spaces
There are two really comfy common areas with couches, a TV, games, and a book shelf. There is as well a huge sitting and dining area where you can enjoy your free breakfast (tea, coffee, juice, toast, waffles) or dine in since the hostel provides supper at a reasonable price. The kitchen is very well equipped and all the ingredients can be used, but since the dinner for the people who want to eat in the hostel is prepared and cooked over there it can be very crowded. You may have to wait quite a while to prepare your own food.
In the back of the hostel is a huge outside sitting area with a BBQ and a fireplace or just sit at the front bench and watch people passing by. There is free parking in front of the house. The hostel offers free internet and wireless.
Summary
With its homey and cozy atmosphere, this hostel is a place to get stuck. It is clean, tidy, and secure. If it rains, stay and wait for good weather because the sunset at Riviere Du Loop has been rated one of the most beautiful in Canada.
Great Hostel -- clean, nice staff
I was there in Mid May 2008. This Hostel has everything you need. Nice and helpful stuff and the rooms are clean and some are with bathroom en-suite. The included breakfast was fantastic. I had a great time there and can just recommend it.
One of the greatest hostels in Canada. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Really great place to stay.
A very clean, tidy, stylish, and friendly place. Could have stayed here for ages. A couple of the staff were however a little sharp in their manner towards anyone who couldn't speak French (in this case, me), which was a shame. The place itself is cool though.
This is a good hostel. I only stayed here one night unfortunately but the staff were friendly, the rooms were nice, the kitchen was superb and breakfast was provided. Had a friendly atmosphere too.
