Memory Guesthouse Jb is located in Johor Bahru, which is not your typical backpacker destination -- most tourists only stop in the city for a night before they cross over to Singapore, so it is not surprising that Memory Guesthouse is pretty much the only hostel available in the city. This does not mean that it will be a last resort kind of option, however -- the hostel has an amazingly cosy atmosphere with a big outdoor area, a mini zoo, and dorms with individual bed cabins, all of which make it a great place to stay.

The Location

Memory Guesthouse is located about twenty minutes' walk from the seafront, where the centre of town is also found. Moreover, this is the point where you can go through immigration and catch the bus to Singapore (it is not possible to simply cross the bridge on foot!). The area of the hostel is quiet and residential, with the choice of a few local-style eateries in walking distance.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is not big and the only dorm is a long corridor with bed cabins on both sides -- you get a space all to yourself which is divided from the rest of the room by a curtain. Inside, you have a single bed with a shelf, a few clothes hangers, a bedside lamp and an electronic plug, and a luggage storage underneath. The bed itself is quite hard, but the arrangement itself definitely gives you a private enough space in which to snooze. There are three bathrooms and toilets at various points of the hostel and they are clean and functional.

Common Spaces

All the common areas are outside on the terrace. As you walk into the hostel, you are welcomed by a "rain curtain" that sprays cold water onto you, which is really appreciated in the hot weather. On the terrace, you have a basic kitchen. Each guest is assigned a mug to use, and for which the guest is responsible during the stay. There are plenty of sitting areas as well with some books and boardgames, and there is also a mini zoo where you can watch some birds and rabbits jump around.

Summary

While Johor Bahru might not be the most memorable place on your trip, Memory Guesthouse will definitely leave some nice memories. It is friendly place with a welcoming atmosphere, and although most people are only staying for a night, the nice outdoor area provides an excellent space for socialisation.

• Arriving at Larkin Bus Terminal:
• By Apps Car-
• If you have active phone data, using UBER or GRAB CAR is the best option. Fare is very reasonable and service is normally good.
• By Bus-
• Take bus number 227 or 208. Tell the bus captain you want to alight at Jalan Yahya Awal in front of Saujana apartment. Once alighted, walk straight towards the traffic junction and cross over. Walk straight ahead for another 150 metres until you see a 16-storey building known as TNB and a Indian eatery on the opposite side of the road. Walk up the lane known as Lorong 4. Once you reach the junction, turn right. The first house on your right is your destination. Walking time is approximately 7 minutes.
• By Taxi-
• Taxi fare is about 10 Malaysian ringgit. Travel time is about 15 minutes. Always use the red colored taxi (or budget taxi) and request for metered fare.
• By Walking-
• It is not advisable as it may take you about 45 minutes.
• Arriving at JB Sentral:
• By Apps Car-
• If you have active phone data, using UBER or GRAB CAR is the best option. Fare is very reasonable and service is normally good.
• By Walking-
• If you have a map of our location you should be able to locate us by walking. The prominent buildings/features to note are City Square shopping mall, Public bank, Landmark building, Catholic church, Holy Light christian church, Remand prison, signalised traffic junction, Saint Joseph Convent school, Shell petrol station, Petron petrol station, TNB (16-storey) building. Directly opposite TNB building is Lorong 4. Walk up the lane (Lorong 4) until you reach the junction and turn right. The first house on your right is your destination. Walking time is about 20 minutes.
• By Taxi-
• Booking from the counter is 12 Malaysian ringgit. Hailing from the road-side is about 7 Malaysian ringgit. Travel time is about 7 minutes. If the taxi driver is unsure of the location, tell him to go to Jalan Yahya Awal, TNB building. Directly opposite TNB building is a lane known as Lorong 4.
• Move up Lorong 4 until you hit the junction, turn right. The first house on your right is your destination. Always use the red colored taxi (or budget taxi) and request for metered fare.
• By Bus-
• This is not advisable as it can be quite erratic in its schedule.
• Arriving at Senai International Airport:
• By Apps Car-
• If you have active phone data, using UBER or GRAB CAR is the best option. Fare is very reasonable and service is normally good.
• By Airport bus-
• The airport bus departs every hour direct to JB Sentral. Fare is MYR 8.00. Please look up our direction from JB Sentral.
• By Taxi-
• The red colored taxi (or budget taxi) is about MYR 44.00 using its metered fare.
