Lovely Jubbly Villa

The Review

The first thing we noticed upon entering Lovely Jubbly Villa are all the lush green plants surrounding the swimming pool and all down the side of the building. They have made a great effort to maintain the garden and to create a tropical feeling. You can almost forget that you're in the city center.

The Location

The hostel is situated in the center of the city, on a quiet street. It's just under two kilometers or a 20-minute walk to the Royal Palace and waterfront. Street 51 nightlife is just a short walk from here, as well as the Central Market. It's an old but well-looked-after building, with a high, carved ceiling. Being in the city center, there are many shops and restaurants in the vicinity, but the street on which the hostel is located is quiet.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Our six-bed dorm room is up a large old, well-maintained wooden staircase, on the first floor. It's of a fair size and the hostel has a policy of no luggage in the rooms. Just outside the bedroom door, in the corridor, are large, cage-like lockers to which they provide a padlock. All luggage is stored in these lockers, which has its pros and cons. It certainly keeps the room clear of all backpacks and suitcases, which makes the room feel neat, clean, and comfortable; however, it is inconvenient having to go out into the corridor every time you want something from your bag.

The mattresses are covered with thick, creaky plastic and then a sheet, so every move you make in the bed makes a loud, creaky sound -- not very good in a dorm room with other guests. The bed is equipped with electric sockets but no reading light; they also provide a towel and thin blanket. The guests are in control of the air conditioner. There is a large window in the dorm room, but the window is so dirty, it's not even possible to see what's outside, so we keep the curtains closed.

The bathroom is en suite and is the biggest we've seen in a hostel -- there is plenty of space to do anything you like in there. The shower is a hand shower in a bath, but there is no hot water. They provide liquid soap and the toilet paper is two-ply.

Common Spaces

When you enter the hostel, you first walk through the bar/restaurant area and then into the reception area. The reception staff are amazing, and very helpful when it comes to maps, tours, and travel arrangements. The restaurant/bar area also doubles as a work space, with many electric sockets. Unfortunately we are unable to eat here, as we're both vegan, and although we can tweak any vegetarian meal into a vegan one, the restaurant staff are not open to suggestion, or want to charge us the same price even though they have removed all egg, cheese, and meat from the meal. To be fair, they did offer to add an extra lettuce leaf!

There is soft music playing in the background of the common area, which gives the place a happy, friendly atmosphere. There is also a large, flat-screen TV with DVDs for those who want to just sit and relax. The Wi-Fi is super fast. With the large doors opening onto the swimming pool area, it's not possible to use an air conditioner in this room. Instead they have two large ceiling fans that keep the air moving and keep the room cool. Just outside the front entrance door is the swimming pool, with lounge chairs, hammocks, and also a few tables and chairs where you can eat or work. The pool area is a great social space where we play volleyball and lounge around on the chairs afterward. The hostel is clean, but not spotless. The floors are cleaned, but not in the corners or along the sides of the room.

We're happy with our stay here, except for the restaurant being unwilling to cater for us. Whether you want to relax and just chill out, or want to socialize and meet other people, this seems to be a good place to do so.
