Bedbugs
this place is likely the worst to waste your money and get sick because I had to take my girlfriend to the doctor due to her having an episode from bedbugs infecting her leg. May as well stay on the street.
Nice customer service, old hostel facilities
Need renovation. Need new facilities. Including toilet and bathroom. Otherwise, perfect.
The Spencer Backpackers is a basic but nice accommodation inside the former historical Spencer Hotel, which gives it a unique atmosphere. The kitchen is located next to the rooftop terrace and provides enough space with a good view to enjoy your dishes.
The Location
The former hotel has a very central location, very close to the CBD; it is about ten minutes to the Southern Cross Station, where you can find plenty of fast food restaurants and the next bigger supermarket (Coles). The house is at the corner of Spencer Street and Rosslyn Street. With this central location you won't have any problems finding a nearby pub or club. The next park (Flagstaff Park) is just about five minutes up the Dudley Street -- it's a nice location to enjoy a picnic and you can jump on the free tourist tram.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The six-bed dorm in which we stayed was clean and big with mostly comfortable beds. It contains a mobile heater mashing for the cool winter nights, but in the summer it gets very hot in the room and it's not easy to fall asleep at night. There are enough power points and you get clean linen at check-in. The bathrooms are shared but clean and we didn't had to wait for the showers. But the water temperature changes sometimes as the building -- and therefore the water system -- is old.
Common Spaces
There is a "dark" living room with comfortable couches and one public computer. But you will probably spend the most time at the rooftop "garden" (no plants -- just tables and stuff to sit and enjoy your dishes or a cold beer). The kitchen is directly connected to the rooftop garden, which makes it a very bright room -- it's pretty big and comes with all normal facilities including an oven. Unfortunately there is no free Wi-Fi, but you can pay to use it inside your room. Free coffee and tea is available in the kitchen. For smokers, there is a balcony on the first floor and the rooftop on the second floor where smoking is allowed. The laundry machines are "outside" at the back of the building.
Summary
As the prices are pretty cheap for the season in Melbourne, we were very happy to find this accommodation and can definitely recommend this hostel! The staff is very friendly and helpful -- it was no problem as we choose the wrong room at our booking and they swapped the room for us during check-in.
Had a great time here
This hostel is really comfortable and I felt at home here. The kitchen is great for socialising and barbeques. It is also close to the bus station.
Bad backpackers
the spencer backpackers is clean but manager is very rude and abrupt to customers. too many bedbugs in rooms, leaking water taps in bathrooms, too many young persons using dope in rooms and main lounge rooms.
Do not stay there!!!
we stayed there for a few nights, loud, dirty, bedbugs, poor amenities, uncomfortable beds. way to small for an average bloke. yes it is cheaper but we had a hassle with the woman working there after having made a reservation she said we had not and so forth. and tried the hidden cost trick too!! we are easy going but we got sick and infected form the bedbugs had to get antibiotics and pay for a prescription. trust me it is worth paying a bit more to stay more centrally in Melbourne or just go to St. Kilda!
Awesome
Really friendly staff, welcoming and easygoing. Organised, clean, comfortable. five-minute walk to southern cross. Overall, after a long, hot, dirty day at the big day out, we were very pleased to be able to come back to this hostel and relax comfortably. Thumbs Up!
Great little cozy place
Staff are helpful, friendly, and deal with things quickly; the place has a nice relaxed homely feel. the restaurant downstairs is a bit upmarket for most backpackers but I'd recommend this place just for the atmosphere. the upstairs kitchen and balcony means you can eat and relax outside. I liked it.
