Germaican Hostel

The Review

As you may be able to guess from the name, Germaican Hostel was founded by two German brothers who moved to Jamaica, and you will most likely hear a lot of German during your visit. The views are amazing and the staff make you feel like home.

The Location

The hostel is located on a hill in a suburb of Port Antonio. This area of Jamaica is a bit harder to get to, but is definitely worth the effort! As the hostel is located far from the center, they offer free shuttles to a bar where you can get route taxis to and from town, very thoughtful. Note that you'll need to prepare and do your shopping in town, as there is nothing in the vicinity of the hostel; it is very secluded, and that is part of why it's so charming (they do have some basic snacks and drinks for sale at the hostel).

Rooms and Bathrooms

Although it seems like the guys are constantly trying to work on the property and make it better, this place requires a lot of work. There are lots of bugs and mosquitos in the rooms and the beds never seem quite clean. Some of the rooms are more crowded than others, but some are quite beautiful and spacious. This place is very eclectic; we find it's part of the charm. There are no lockers for storage of valuables but the atmosphere is very laid back, so we didn't feel uncomfortable leaving our stuff around. There's no air conditioning, but there are a few little fans in the room. It's not a big problem, because the hostel is on a hill, and it gets quite fresh around here at night. There are a couple of bathrooms, and they are not very clean, but water is scarce around here, so you probably won't be using them that often anyway.

Common Spaces

You'll find people hanging out around the kitchen, but the main hotspot is the porch outside. There are seats and swings and hammocks and the view of the Caribbean Sea is absolutely breathtaking (it's a prime spot to watch the sunrise). There are a couple of adorable dogs and a cat, and they love to play, so if you're not a big animal lover, this may not be the place for you. There are a couple of sun beds with a view as well. There's free W-Fi -- it's not the best, but it works. There is also a complimentary breakfast; it is usually vegan friendly and it's exotic and delicious!

This place is off the beaten path and it's not suitable for everyone, but if you're looking to chill out and hang out with nice people and you don't mind being a bit uncomfortable or far from civilization, it's very easy to fall in love with this hostel.
