Onuku Farm Hostel

The Hostelz.com Review

Onuku Farm Hostel offers different kinds of accommodation on their farm. The hostel is basic and it’s one of those "love it or hate it" places, so decide for yourself.

The Location

The hostel is located on a farm on the Banks Peninsula. It is about a fifteen-minute drive from Akaroa and it really feels like this farm is located in the middle of nowhere. It is at the end of the street, so this hostel can best be reached with your own transport. There is no public transport available and hitchhiking will be challenging. There are a few signs along the road to let you know you are on the right road to the hostel and there is free parking available at the farm.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are different kinds of accommodation available -- private huts, a dorm hut, and rooms in the farmhouse. The private huts are stargazing huts, which basically are wooden tents with a see-through roof so you can see the stars from your bed. Bed linen is not included. The dorm hut is located on the campsite and is really basic. It has seven beds, which are very different in quality (so come early to get the best pick). The room is not heated and has no electricity or bed linen. It gets cold and dark here during the night, so you better come prepared. The bathrooms for the dorm hut and stargazing huts are the campsite facilities. The showers have warm water and the toilets are flush toilets, but it is all very small and basic. The dorms in the farmhouse offer a bit more luxury. The beds are more comfortable and bed linen is included. There is electricity and there are "normal" bathrooms in the farmhouse.

Common Spaces

The accommodation on the campsite share two kitchens and a living room. One kitchen is outside and the other is inside. Both are fully equipped and cooking is on gas. The equipment is quite ok, but the kitchens could be a bit cleaner. The living room area is small but very cozy and it has a fireplace. The farmhouse also has a fully equipped kitchen and a living room.

The atmosphere in this hostel is very nice. People are friendly and it is very easy to get in contact with other travelers. They offer kayaking and swimming with hector dolphins against good prices, and surprisingly, they also have free Wi-Fi, even at the campsites.

Onuku Farm Hostel is a fun place in good weather, but it is not for everybody. The facilities are very basic (which is reflected in the low prices), it can get cold during the night, and the showers and toilets are a short walk from the dorm. If you don’t mind all this, it is a good place to relax for a few days and do some walking or kayaking.

For real NZ, See the great Banks Peninsula; stay at Onuku Farm Hostel
The Banks Peninsula is just stunning, period! Onuku farm hostel is such a fantastic place to chill; great people; wonderful atmosphere. It obviously has kept all that made it a great stay for me and friends in 1990-91!!
Great hostel! We slept in a double bedroom which was a cabin at three minutes walk from the main house. A lovely walk I must add. Private toilets for this cabin were a few seconds away. The view and atmosphere at this place is excellent. So if you like a laid back environment with lots of New Zealand sheep surrounding you -- then this is your thing!

Imagine adventurous sheepland directly to the coast, golden sunsets, playing volleyball until the sun comes down, calls of bellbird and cicadas. With one word: Onuku. This place is great in two ways. The setting is just, well, like paradise (and could you imagine paradise with sandflies? No! And really -- there're no sandflies). The second way are the people there -- Tom, Jeff, and Steve (the "roots" of Onuku, I got to know) plus the people who come there. They're all so friendly and funny. I really liked my time here and when I come back to NZ Onuku will be one of the first places I'm gonna visit again.
This is the best hostel i ever stayed at in my life. The hosts are very welcoming, the views are awesome, and the atmosphere is amazing. Oh and the volleyball -- don't miss it! The real farm experience, i loved the pet lamb and Babe.
One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in (I've been there for one week 11/2005) -- great atmosphere, nice local walks, stunning views, funny volleyball-game every evening, lovely people -- just chill out

I stayed here in my tent in 2002. Lovely place, with a million dollar view of the volcanic harbor. Damn, that was such a wonderful trip - I'd like to go back there at this moment, which unfortunately is not practical at this time. Cheers.
Excellent hotel. Great chill out place, with lovely cabins, horse rides, and stuff. A bit easier if you have a car, though.
It has the best atmosphere ever! I had a great time here. I hope to come back someday. Love to all the great people from the farm!
