We stayed here in March, 2004. It was one of the best hostels that we stayed at during our 2-month journey touring New Zealand. The staff were fun, the hostel was spotless, and the beds were comfortable!! Highly recommended, but beware of the steep hill that you have to walk up after a night in the city!!
Booked for 4 nights, stayed for 2 weeks. Wonderful place.
Really enjoyed the vibe here and friendly atmosphere, relaxed, great location and helpful staff. What I was not impressed with were the number of flies about the place and no traps!! Rooms were dirty and hot!! I got bitten by bed bugs, Had to leave windows open because rooms were too hot this allowed mosquitoes in. Then also getting bitten by these.
Liked: It's a good place to stay all time with really friendly people , and good space for cooking and it's a comfortable place. Only one trouble it's there are not a free wifi nearly , but all around it's nicely and you forget the Internet completely Didn't like: Not free wifi
Liked: Nice property with a good garden area and lots of sunshine if you just want to have a chill day and stay in. Bed was comfy and clean and the staff we saw were friendly and smiley. Didn't like: the long term residents take over the place so you feel like you are intruding at a party. We arrived for check in but had to wait nearly 3 hours for a member of management to arrive to check us in so wasted a day sitting around. Also the hostel is run half by the long term residents so on a night it can be noisy as there is no proper staff to quieten everyone down.
Liked: Very safe, secure, and friendly. Staff were good. Felt very homely. Didn't like: Have to pay $10 per month for wifi.
Liked: Friendly staff and clean rooms! You are around Ponsonby, which is a nice part of Auckland, but still like a 30 minute walk from downtown (or take a bus). But on the other hand it is a quite and relaxing, so if you want some day off, go for it! Didn't like: The common rooms in the main building have a very cozy atmosphere, but unfortunately it is possible that you end up in the building beside which is very basic and improvised. The have a very small common room and a kitchen. Hanging around there is not so nice, but you can still go out and to the house beside.
Liked: We got a double room, in a separate apartment to the right - was great privacy. Kitchen bathroom all clean. Didn't like: Long term guests kind of take over in this apartment.
Liked: Location superbHannes was absolutely lovely Didn't like: Nothing
Liked: Garden, staff Didn't like: No free wireless
Liked: The supervisor Didn't like: The room, the untidyness..
Liked: It's location Ponsby is very good and the kitchen we used was well equipped. The day manager was pretty helpful. Didn't like: We were in the apartment building next to the actual hostel and the building lacked any character, and felt cut off from the actual hostels amenities. The Internet is expensive, we ended up spending $20, and we didn't even use the Internet for any heavy traffic. The shower flooded as well.
Liked: People , character, Didn't like: The bathroosm are a bit silly
