Tripinn Hostel Backpackers YHA

The Review

Tripinn Hostel YHA Westport is a very welcoming and lively, Victorian-style hostel with lots of common spaces to relax and socialise. The hostel has free internet through vouchers that can be obtained for free at the reception. Laundry service is available. There are racks for bike storage in the back of the garden, where the hostel has also some bicycles for free use by guests.

The Location

Westport is the largest town in the north of the West Coast and has many accommodation options and several hostels. Tripinn Hostel is located on Queen Street, parallel to Westport's main shopping street and highway to Karamea, so any services you need are at walking distance from the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel has a wide range of rooms, such as dorm rooms, twin rooms, double rooms, triple rooms, and four-bed rooms. Rooms are generally very clean, with carpeted floors and plenty of light. Bathrooms are very clean, with a toilet, shower, and sink, separated by doors. Showers have soap racks, hangers, and a shower curtain to separate dry clothes from the rest of the shower. The sink has a soap dispenser and a towel. Towels and linen are provided by the hostel.

Common Spaces

The hostel has an extensive area of common spaces considering the number of bedrooms it has. Outside the hostel, you can enjoy four wooden picnic tables, overlooking a grass area for camping or hanging clothes. There is also a billiard room. The hostel has a cute, limp black cat called "Paddle" who is always around.

The hostel kitchen is very spacious, with two long islands for preparing food; various racks with pots, pans, cooking utensils, cutlery, glasses, mugs, wine glasses,; two fridges; one big freezing container (usually quite full); twelve gas stoves; a microwave; two kettles; two toasters; two sinks; and free coffee, tea, and sugar. Gas stoves are switched off after 10 p.m. but the kitchen still remains open.

There are two spacious lounges, both with a wood-burning stove and several sofas and armchairs. Each room has a large screen TV with DVDs and board games. There is an area with six tables for working or eating. These tables are normally free in the summer as most people eat outside on the terrace.

This welcoming, Victorian-style hostel has a large proportion of common spaces for those wanting to spend some days in Westport or just relax, with people of all ages.

Best hostel in NZ
Super friendly and everything you could hope for.
I wanted to give this place 5 stars
I loved the ambiance and style of this hostel. The attention to details captured me and I loved this aspect ... from the manicured gardens, to the modern linen and wonderful antique, quirky decor. The owners are lovely, on the ball and attentive. I stayed here with my 2 year old and he loved the cats and the tiny puppy, he also liked the cosy lounge room. As for warmth ... I was happier here than in my own home! Great heaters, electric blankets, very clean bedding (extra cosy). The downfall was that the dining area was unclean ... I put the blame here on fellow travelers actually, but with a lack of hostel experience, wonder if it could have been better? The bathroom also had a lack of toilet paper ... I still walked away exceedingly happy. We loved our stay here and it was worth every one of our tight budget dollars spent!

The Location The inn is located two short blocks from the main street in Westport. It is close to the grocery store, the post office and all cafes and pubs. The street it is located on gets very little traffic and parking is around the back. Rooms and Bathrooms All the bedrooms have been recently renovated. They are clean, bright, attractive, have beds of good quality, and good linens. My double had plenty of closet space, built in drawers and easily accessible power, plus two reading lights above the bed. There are also some stand-alone units on onside of the building. Bathrooms are very clean with new fixtures and plenty of hot water provided by individual electric “on demand” units. You’ll see the owners doing chores and cleaning in the morning. Common Spaces There are two large common areas. The first has six tables for dining, two computers (with headphones) on one table and another table for wireless laptops but the wireless works throughout the building. Since this is a YHA hostel it has global gossip, which in my opinion, is the best of the hostel Internet providers. This room also has a TV, comfortable furniture, and a wonderful coal stove that makes the room very cozy on a wet Westport evening. The common room through the doorway has a TV for viewing DVDs, so movie watchers can watch flicks in another room with the door closed. This room’s furniture is also very good and it to has a wood stove. My favorite though was the very large kitchen. It has three gas cook tops, that are well spaced, two double stainless steel sinks with draining sideboards, a small fridge, chest freezer, microwave, convection oven and a commercial cooler. You can put everything right into this within your own cooler bag. The owners also came through the kitchen and cleaned it thoroughly each day. Since the inn has been being renovated, there are still full place settings of matching dishes. Washer and dryer available at a reasonable price and the machines use coins and not tokens. There is a large deck, half of which is covered, and a beautiful backyard. There is a well-designed set of rules for guest regarding visitors (prior permission), drinking (none after 10:30 pm), quiet in the bedroom areas (after 10:30 pm), cleaning the kitchen, outside security, and laundry. Summary This is an excellent inn. It is clean, well maintained, tastefully decorated, has friendly, helpful, visible owners, and a well defined set of rules for guests. While some may chafe at the rules, it makes for a nice relaxed atmosphere across age groups. Most of the people who stayed here were responsible and activity oriented, this is not a party BPs. We sat around talking and drinking wine or beer and everyone was headed to bed by 10:30 anyway. Several guests even asked if the TV volume was OK as not to disturb the group talking. I really enjoy it when everyone is concerned about everyone else.

Tripinns is a fairly nice hostel. It is large and very busy, a nice crowd ranging from young to old, students to bikers. It had all the normal hostel necessities and the owners were very pleasant. It is also in a good location just two blocks from the main road (Westport is a very small town). It did have an odd bathroom/shower setup and the water pipes squealed during use (even in the middle of the night). Mattresses were not comfortable.
The Tripinn is without question the best backpackers in Westport. It's centrally located and easy to find, only a five-minute walk from the town's bus stop. Originally a stately gentleman's residence built in the late 1860s, it is now protected under the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. It's still in great shape too, and very clean. The kitchen is a little on the small side, but never gets too busy. The dining room, which also has a piano, is huge. There are separate TV and video lounges with over 100 free movies to choose from. Beds are comfortable, although there is a small extra charge for duvets -- just use your sleeping bag. The showers are excellent and there are plenty of bathrooms, all of which are cleaned regularly. The best asset of the Tripinn is its owners. An extremely friendly elderly couple who refer to the building as their "big old beauty," they will go out of their way to make you feel at home. You'll meet all kinds of travellers at the Tripinn, from family holiday makers to groups of friends to solo travellers. There's more to do in Westport than people think -- white water rafting, adventure caving, horse trekking, surf rafting, mountain biking, argo trips, scenic tours, kayaking, cave walks, heli-rafting, jet boating, and some awesome underworld rafting. There are also plenty of walks and overnight tramps in the area. It's very easy to stay at the Tripinn for much longer than you originally intend to.
