Main Inn Taipei is a big, clean hostel with both privates and dorm rooms. The twenty-four-hour reception is welcoming and polite, but more hotel-like than hostel-like. In fact, generally it has a hotel vibe. The hostel's lighting is somewhat dark in both the rooms and the common area, but at least the latter has windows.
The Location
It has a perfect location, only a few clicks from Taipei main station, making transport to and from this place very convenient. There is shopping and one of Taipei’s night markets nearby. So, for a short stay or as a base, either way the location is great.
Rooms and Bathrooms
It's a rather dark (there are no windows) and small dorm room, but it's clean and has spacious and private cubicles. Beds are between normal and queen size, a tiny "desk" area in each cubicle has a light and plugs as well as space for some belongings and clothing hangers. The beds are quite hard but good. Also, the beds are already made.
A big, keyed locker is available for each bed; in it, you will find some amenities like a toothbrush, bottled water, and your towel. The well-ventilated bathroom attached to the dorm is plenty big and has soap for you use, as well as a hair dryer; even if you are not the one using it, you will be totally involved in the experience.
Common Spaces
There's a nice, spacious common area on the sixth floor (there are no elevators) with plenty of amenities. There is an equipped bar/kitchen fit for eating and reheating food. The fridge is big and wasn't very full during our stay, but considering the size of the hostel it is actually quite small. The orange juice in the fridge is freely available and there's (good, freshly ground) coffee and tea too. This common area also has a (free) laundry room and a small rooftop terrace -- it's a shame the view is practically nonexistent. Overall, it is a nice common space with enough facilities to chill for a bit or eat some food.
Summary
Considering the location a few seconds from the main station, this place is a good stop for a short stay -- or for a longer stay, depending what you expect, as it does seem to be a more keep-to-yourself place. The price/quality ratio is very good, with the added value of a very convenient location, making this a good choice to stay in Taipei.
