La Catrina Hostel & Breakfast is set in San Miguel de Allende -- if you're looking for a typical, Mexican easygoing, relaxed town, it would indeed be difficult to surpass this one as an option. It has the charm, flavour and feel that make traveling into Mexico a wonderful experience. The hostel is located just a pleasant, ten-minute walk from the Central Park (Jardín Allende), which is the heart of the town.
This small town, set in the central part of the country, is only four hours from Mexico City and perfectly connected by comfortable, modern buses. Walking through town, you'll find an assortment of lovely houses with multicoloured, bright façades adorning its cobblestoned streets. Art galleries and art-craft markets, small cafés, emblematic bars (cantinas), and restaurants offering everything from simple, delicious meals to highly sophisticated Mexican Cuisine are just a few of the many delights the town has to offer. Although San Miguel hosts a large ex-pat population, it still holds its own in ambience, and it is without doubt, a must while traveling the country.
City buses to and from the bus terminal are a block-and-a-half away; the ride to the bus terminal is inexpensive and short -- around twenty minutes. One of the interesting places to visit and only a few minutes away is the market -- it's a great place to stock up with fresh produce and come back to cook a meal, or perhaps, just eat there in the local diners. Like any typical Mexican market, there are so many other things to see and enjoy. Just browsing the colourful market is a delightful experience.
The hostel is located on a quiet street. The building is a beautiful, large, two-story house in pristine condition. The reception, kitchen, and most of the private rooms are found on the ground floor. This part of the house is decorated in a lively Mexican style, full of art and tiny little details incorporated into the decoration. La Catrina Hostel has good ventilation throughout and the also good illumination in the day and the night. All in all, it has a good cheerful ambience that makes for a good place to stay.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers six private rooms, all very nicely furnished and with lively Mexican-style décor. Beds are comfortable with excellent mattresses. Half of the rooms have their own bathroom, and the rest have shared exterior bathrooms. Private rooms are in a separate wing on the ground floor. Each room has a different capacity that varies from two to six people per private room.
There are three dorms in the hostel -- two are mixed dorms (one with four beds, and the other with six). The remaining dorm is a four-bed dorm for women. All dorms have two-bed bunks, and they include a bedside lamp and electrical outlets per each bed. Also, there’s a locker for each bed and the bunks have two large drawers under the lower berth. Mattresses are excellent and new in all rooms. All in all, the dorms are all pleasant, spacious, and quiet environments for a good night's rest. Cleaning in the rooms and dorms is done on a daily basis during the morning hours, and they are left in pristine condition.
The shared bathrooms are cleaned constantly during the day, and they are impeccable. Hot showers and good water pressure are found in all the showers, with hooks and racks to hang clothes and personal items. Toilets are located on both floors; they're well equipped and are also kept impeccably clean all day long.
The common spaces consist of a large, spacious area located right after the reception and two roof terraces with spectacular views of the town. The indoor area is equipped with a large TV and a huge collection of movies for a rainy day or quiet evening. Also, there are tables where you can sit and chat or eat a meal. The outdoor terraces are the spot to watch the sunset and enjoy a few drinks, while getting to meet other travelers. The only drawback is that, although furnished with comfortable chairs and outdoor tables, there is no shade against San Miguel de Allende’s strong sun.
La Catrina Hostel & Breakfast definitely is well located near the center, but on a quiet street and surroundings. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Common spaces make for good gathering spots to meet other guests and enjoy a bit of time out of outdoor activities. Rooms and dorms are well equipped, and the bathrooms are comfortable, clean, and have everything you need. This is a good place to stay in the beautiful town of San Miguel de Allende.
