Asia BackPackers Koh Chang has a really cool and relaxed vibe, set out of the hustle and bustle of the major towns -- but not so far away that you cannot get to the attractions. It has a nice jungle feel to it.

The Location

As it's located at Bang Bao, you will need to catch the taxi from the ferry terminal pretty much the entire way around the island to get here. Tell the driver that you are going to Asia Backpackers, Bang Bao, and they will pretty much drop you at the doorstep on their way. Located only a short walk from the hostel is the Bang Bao Pier, where you can find a heap of really good seafood restaurants and the famous lighthouse. It is also a short walk from Bang Bao Beach, one of the nicest beaches on the island.

Rooms and Bathrooms

They have multiple different options for rooms here at the Asia Backpackers. There are standard dorm rooms as well as tents that they supply, and even hammocks. There are also private bungalows too, so there are a range of different options and prices are decent for the area.

They have four combined toilet/showers that are located in the middle of the property; they are clean and kept in good condition. They are only used by people staying in the dorms, tents, or hammocks so they aren't usually full and you can use them when you need.

Common Spaces

Above the main building is the reception and an area with a table and some chairs as well as a bunch of bar stools, so that you can sit around the edges of the rooftop and look out over the jungle. The reception has a fridge with many local and imported beers and ciders for sale. Otherwise, there is a large number of places to chill out on the lawn, a few tables and chairs downstairs, and some hammocks scattered around the property where you can relax.

Summary

To get around the island, you can take one of the many taxis that drive around and pick people up, but quite a lot of the things to see in the southern part of the island are within walking distance. This hostel is a great place to stay here in Koh Chang!

Location and Contact

Location

• From the ferries to the Hostel:
• On arrival at any of the ferry piers on Koh Chang, you will find mini pick-up truck taxis called Songthaews (a pick-up truck with seating running down both flanks of the rear of the vehicle) ready to take you anywhere on Koh Chang, for 50 to 150 Baht per person depending on the distance. We are approx. 25 mins away and the fare is approx. 150Baht, always agree the price with the driver before getting on board the Songthaews.
• Flying from Bangkok to Trat:
• Bangkok Airways are the owners of Trat Airport and therefore have a monopoly on the daily flights to/from Bangkok. The prices for the 40 minute shuttle service isn’t cheap, with prices from 3,100 – 3,500 Baht/person one way depending on time of year, it can be a stress free way of getting there but the costs are prohibitive. Be warned the airline has a habit of cancelling flights if they aren’t too full, something which is all too common in Asia, so do double check your flight, even in high season. www.bangkokairways.com
• Buses from Bangkok
• The best route on time and money is the bus from Ekamai Bus Station to the Trat ferry piers, with prices around 300 Baht per person.
• Government Bus 99 Bangkok Laem Ngop Laem Ngob Bangkok
• 07:45, 09:45 14:00 16:00
• www.transport.co.th is a good site for online bus booking but it is mainly in Thai, in true Thai style, just show up at the bus station 30 minutes before departure time and you should be fine, except on Thai Holidays and high seasons when you do need to book to ensure your seat.
• Buses going to Laem Ngop don’t go through Trat and will save travelling time. Do note, buses heading to Trat will often stop about 25km before Trat, when they know passengers are heading to Koh Chang, you will be asked to disembark but don’t worry, you will be put on a pickup truck taxi to the ferry pier. (This isn’t free, but you would have to pay for a pickup truck taxi from Trat to the pier anyway, and it does save you time.)
• Other options: All prices are approx.
• Minibuses pick up and drop off at the airport terminal itself near the Siam Beach Minibus booth at Door 8 on the ground floor at the airport. At present departures are at 07.50, 11.00 & 14.00
• Ticket price for the minibus service is 600 Baht for Bangkok Airport – Koh Chang; 400 Baht for Koh Chang- Bangkok Airport and a round trip ticket is 800 Baht.
• Rather going direct you can break up the travel time by going via Pattaya, it takes approx. 1.30-2.00 hours to Pattaya and from there a further 3.30-4.00 to Trat. There are heaps of buses hourly to Pattaya, an added benefit for late arrivals into Bangkok and the issue with the last ferry crossings to Koh Chang.
• By Mini Bus from Bangkok
• There are many mini buses plying between Bangkok and Ao Thammachat, Centre Point and Laem Ngob piers. Mini bus transfers from the Victory Monument in Bangkok to Ao Thammachat ferry pier, and vice versa start at 05:00 a.m. and the last trip is at 07:00 p.m. The mini bus leaves every 2 hours and costs 300 Baht per person. For those in Koh Chang (66 8 7833 7696), you can buy tickets at Ao Sapparos pier. For those in Bangkok (66 8 7833 8985), you can proceed to the parking lot for mini buss at the northeast corner of the Victory Monument.
• The same company that operates VIP buses, the Suvarnabhumi Burapa Co., Ltd., also has a fleet of mini buss that travel to Suvarnabhumi airport daily. It leaves Koh Chang at 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. Mini buss from the airport park at 1st floor, Exit 8 and leaves at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m.
