Penzance Backpackers

Description

The Hostelz.com Review

At Penzance Backpackers, the whole place is sparkling clean, friendly, and comfortable.

The Location

The hostel is a bit of a hike from the train and bus station -- but if a thirty-minute walk will be too much for you with luggage, you can take the local bus heading pretty much anywhere on the peninsula to get most of the way to the hostel. It's on a fairly quiet residential street in a nice area just out of the town center -- five minutes' walk from the Coast Path, in the direction of Mousehole. Larger grocery stores and the edge of the downtown cafe/pub district are about ten minutes' walk away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms (mostly upstairs) are well laid out -- the beds are wonderfully comfortable and not too crowded; they are mainly bunks with the occasional single bed if you arrive at the right moment. Each dorm has an attached bathroom with sink/toilet/shower, which is nice for when you want to go in the middle of the night, and there are also shared showers which comes in handy if your whole room is trying to wake up and get ready for the day at the same time.

Common Spaces

The kitchen, at the back of the ground floor, is well laid out and supplied with everything necessary, including self-serve coffee and tea available for an honor donation, and a decent selection of free/abandoned foods (obviously your luck may vary with this one!), plus a nice big table with stools where you can sit around and eat. They request that you sort your rubbish into their existing recycle system, with clearly labelled bins just outside the kitchen door. The TV lounge, at the front of the house, has comfy sofas, a decently stocked bookshelf including tons of local maps and pamphlets, table space for games or map-reading, and a window onto the street. Wi-Fi is available through the hostel; laundry is available through the staff (not self-service).

Summary

Check-in times are limited, but once checked in, you get an electronic door code and can come and go at will. The manager is very friendly and happy to offer advice on the region, or hold luggage after checkout for the day -- during our stay, he was around the hostel almost twenty-four hours, mostly in the office behind the kitchen.

Perfect
This is the cleanest and most comfortable hostel I ever stayed at. There are en suite bathrooms which are cleaned everyday, a lounge where you can relax or work and a self-catering kitchen. Everyone was very friendly. It was the perfect place for me.

Excellent
Stayed for three nights in March 2012, it was my first stay in a backpackers hostel. Pleasantly surprised and highly recommended. Will be going back, next year.

Excellent and friendly host.
One of the Best Hostels. The Host Matt is very friendly and co-operative person. The atmosphere in this Hostel is friendly. The kitchen is too big. I stayed with my son for 4 days and I really enjoyed this hostel. The rooms are very clean. It is only 15 minutes from Penzance rail station. I would like to really thank the Host Matt and Rachel for their kindness and hospitality. As of the rates it is very reasonable.

Loved this hostel and west Cornwall
Stayed here June 2012 with 4 freinds and had an awesome time. We stayed in a mixed sex dorm which was clean and bright and also had en-suite bathroom and free wi-fi. The guy running the place was very helpful and helped us plan our trips around the beautiful west Cornwall. And they also have a well stocked kitchen with lots of herbs and spices and free tea and coffee. I have stayed in many hostels in the past and this one has got to be one of the best. I'll be back in the summer and can't wait.

Great place, helpful people
This is a great place to stay; the rooms (& bathrooms) are clean, quiet, and its really great value for money. It is in a great location -- although you have to find the shortcuts, the sea is the end of the road as well as the bus to lands end. The staff (or owners?) is great, I needed some help and they were really very accommodating. I am happy to recommend this place to anyone, and would stay there again if in Cornwall.

Great Place
PZ Backpackers is a good place to stay and great for the price of £15 per night. You will struggle to find a better hostel anywhere near it. Good facilities include a nice lounge and kitchen with plenty of space. Although it has bunk beds, they are pretty solid and dont creak -- a great bonus in shared dorms. It's only ten minutes walk from the centre of town and all the bus routes out. The staff are very professional and very knowledgeable on local transport, tourist sites, places to eat and drink. I would, and will, recommend it to anyone heading down to that beautiful part of the country.

Clean and friendly
We stayed two nights, the first in a shared dorm, the second in a double room. Only thing I would say about the shared dorm is that the beds were very creaky and the other residents weren't that considerate noisewise, but that's par for the course in a shared dorm! The beds were comfortable, and everywhere was clean. Good kitchen facilities, and free tea and coffee. We had a sink in our room, and used the shared shower room on the corridor which was immaculately clean and had a decent shower in it. Staff were very friendly and chatty, and let us log on to their wireless network with our laptop. Would come again, but only if could book a double room -- well worth the extra £1 each!

It provides a very cozy environment. Helpful staff member and quiet environment. Good value for the money. Highly recommend all budget travelers to stay here if you plan to visit Penzance. If there's two of you, I'd recommend you spent a couple of pounds more for the double room.
