The Lazy Hostel Vieques Reviews from the Web

Place looked like a homeless shack.

no very clean, no very secure the rooms not locked, the staff is ok.

Vibrant hostel, good vibes, cool staff and cool restaurant bar attached to hostel. Location is fantastic - literally across the street from the ocean.

Rooms are very plain, but thats okay just needed the place to sleep.

My only complaint were the amount of mosquitoes inside the room. Idk how they got in there but It was impossible to get rid of them. Had to sleep 100% under the covers to not get destroyed. Hostel should implement some mosquito traps!

Would stay here again tho.

A great chill hostel - nothing fancy and no surprises. Good vibes and a great location. We even had a bonfire on the beach one night!

The website wrongly informs about payment for your stay that can be settled by cash. This hostel will charge your card full amount in advance. The staff says it is their standard procedure since there were many cancellations due to covid or lack of ferry ticket which are solding out real fast and it didn't work well for them.

Really good hostel. Right in the heart of the town of Esperanza, right by the ocean, lots of restaurants nearby, short walk to various beaches. The restaurant/bar attached to the hostel is very convenient and pretty popular. Although there's a lot of mosquitos in the area.

Definitely on the more rustic side. But, it did have a shower, a bed and AC. I will say the Bed in Room 3 on the left hand side on the back, the mattress needs to be switched, I didn't notice how bad it was until my second night, has a huge lump. Please switch that mattress out. Besides that, the hostel was decent and in a good location. I did like the curtains on the bed.

We stayed in one of the private rooms and it was fine. It had working air con and a fridge, but the wifi didn't really work. It seems like it's run by workawayers who were all very sweet (though some were clueless). Shoutout to Baxter for being super welcoming and making sure the guests have a good time!

The place needs lots of renovations, everything looks very old. The room was dark even with the lights on at night, very old bed sheets, the beds are awful, if you move it will make a sound that you feel its gonna fall apart, the mattress is awful old and with stains; showers are full of mold that you dont want to touch the wall or the bath courtain. There is NO breakfast!!! they advertised it as something that is included, (some raw oats and some bread, that was it). The location is good.

Great location, price was right. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Communal area was open spaced and good vibes. It was very active most of the time but still quite late night. Walking distance to many places.

The location is great, right by the sea, staff is very friendly and the place has a good vibe. But the place is not at all clean. My matress cover had (rust?) dots all over it and the room, showers and kitchen need some heavy cleaning/renovation. Access to different parts of the hostel is outside and there is no pavement, just crushed stone. However, if you like camping areas and dont care for cleanliness, this can be a very pleasant place for you.

The staff at check in was extremely helpful and friendly. The location was unbeatable, right in the heart of the malecon area with all the restaurants. It was definitely a party hostel so it was pretty loud until 4am so just keep that in mind if that's what you're looking for or not.

Really great social atmosphere for meeting people, and right on the beach. Could have been cleaner in some areas, but nothing too bad.

Okay, but not great. Very basic rooms and bathrooms. Outdoor area mediocre. I particularly remember this episode: One time I left my key in the hostel because I went swimming. When I came back, main entrance was closed 1h early. So I asked in the bar of the hostel for entry that was about to close. At first, a old guy working there said: 'I'm sorry buddy' and shrugged like he couldn't help me. Then manager came and thanked me for letting her know that staff closed the gate too early.

This didnt feel like a hostel. Yes the rooms were less expensive than others in the area but there was no overnight staff and when the staff were in the office they were not helpful in arranging for a early morning taxi across the island to make it to our ferry on-time. Island taxis are unreliable and we were left to walk the streets and luckily flag down a local who graciously gave us a ride. The on-site bar service wasnt overly friendly. Very loud party noise past 12 led to poor sleep.

This is the perfect place to stay in Vieques! It's a great location for anything you wanna do there: the beach, the boardwalk, hanging at the bar, or meeting with a BioBay tour group. They definitely don't have the roomiest dorms in the world, but you cannot beat the value for money. Vieques was our favorite part of our trip to Puerto Rico!

This hostel has the potential to be a great hostel. However, seems it chos s not to. The primary reason being cleanliness. The hostel seems run by resident young folks staying free for work, but they do nothing to clean. In mornings, the hangouts area felt like a catastrophe - smelt of old beer/alcohol from night before and no one picked up their leftover cups/cans/dirt (the staff folks who stay there were drinking). Same issue with kitchen (unhygienic ) and the bathroom (i never saw them clean)

The location of this hostel is great in relation to many of the beautiful sights on the same side of the island. The hosts were nice. The lodging was sub-par for the money in my opinion. The rooms were very cramped with no windows. The room we stayed in felt like a cell. The only other issue we had was that there was not an identifiable drinking water station. We were told to go to the bar next door to fill our water bottles but the bar was very busy and it took a long time to get water.

Staff were super friendly and answered everything we needed. Facilities were sub par. Only one shower had (barely) enough water pressure to wash our hair, 2 toilets and only 1 worked. Also warning if you stay in room 8 your room has a permanently open window directly facing the smoking section of the hostel so your room will constantly smell like cigarettes.

It is very loud there all night and morning. Loud music, fireworks, pressure washing, the smokers sitting against your wall talking etc.

Location was great - close to the beach and several restaurants. Not a great atmosphere though - when I asked the staff for any recommendations, they could hardly list anything to recommend. Also I saw a rat scurrying along the wall in my private room.

Welcome to the hippest hottest hostel to open in Vieques! We are located right on the boardwalk in Esperanza village, also known as the Malecon. The center of most tourism activity on the island, the Malecon offers within ten minutes of your door three fabulous beaches, seven restaurants, four giftshops, and three convenience stores. Additionally, you may find kayak rentals, snorkel tours and rentals, bio bay tour operations, scooter and jetski rentals, sailing charters and generally all beach-oriented activities on the boardwalk. The best part within the Lazy Hostel complex, is Lazy Jacks, undoubtedly the coolest bar on the island, frequented by locals and tourists alike with a relaxed beach bar atmosphere. Our friendly bartenders have intimate knowledge of all activities on the island and can give you great advice on how to enjoy your stay on the island. As they give you this advice, they can serve you our extensive list of inexpensive drinks and beers, awesome homemade pizza and burgers and much much more from our varied and inexpensive menu. Lazy Jacks also offers an extensive entertainment program, including karaoke and DJ parties, as well as Live Music events. If you want to be at the center of it all for a great time in Vieques, this is the place to be!

Location and Contact

• a. From Ferry we are a fifteen minute ride from the ferry. The publicos are usually there to meet the ferry (unless you take the last ferry at 8pm), ask which one is headed to Esperanza, it will be approximately five dollars per person, direct them to Lazy Jacks in Esperanza on the Malecon, they will know how to find it. You can pre-arrange pickup with one of the taxies, about $15 for one or two passengers. If taking the last ferry, let us know, so we can help you pre-arrange transportation. Note that ferries can sometimes run late, if you can, let us know if this happens to you so we know when to expect you.
• b. From Airport there are taxis usually waiting for $15 approximate charge for one or two passengers, if you dont see any, call Steve or Alyssa for help.
• c. Cars and scooter rental if you have rented a car, they usually offer courtesy pickups from the ferry or airport, so pre-arrange your arrival time with them. Only Coqui car rental is within walking distance from the ferry, the rest of them are located mid-island or on the north side. There is a scooter rental you can walk to in Esperanza, once you make it to the hostel. Arrive early, as they close after five.
• d. Hitchhiking in Vieques common and effective during the daytime if you are willing to wait long enough. If you take one of the early ferries, head right, then walk all through town to the intersection next to the school (about a fifteen minute walk, across the street from the veggie container) and signal to cars turning towards Esperanza. At nighttime, its unlikely you will get picked up. If you arrive at the airport, taxi is your best bet. If you are unsuccessful, try flagging down one of the publicos passing by (minivans with writing on the windshield) or find them by the ferry terminal at next ferry arrival time.
• a. In order to get to Vieques from San Juan, you can fly from San Juan International Airport (SJU, most expensive), fly from Isla Grande Airport (SIG, slightly cheaper), or make your way to the Eastern tip of Puerto Rico an hour and a half away from San Juan metropolitan area and then either take a ferry from Fajardo (very cheap) or fly from Ceiba airport (cheaper than from metro area). Isla Grande regional airport is about 15 minutes and $15 away from Old San Juan or International Airport. Fajardo is $80 fixed rate by taxi if you take an official taxi from one of the metro area airports or $60 if you pre-arrange it with one of the Fajardo-based drivers in advance (email us for suggestions). There is also a cheaper but least convenient publico option (around $10) which is time consuming and not available on Sundays nor holidays, which involves making your way to Rio Piedras publico terminal and taking a publico to Fajardo ferry terminal. Publicos stop plenty in-between, so plan on it taking two-three hours to get to the ferry (versus an hour fifteen by taxi).
