Hostal Doa Mercedes is a home away from home -- it's spacious, in excellent condition, and run by a very sweet and friendly old lady.
The hostel/hotel of Doa Mercedes is located in the village of Juaya. The village is rather small and the hostel is about a couple of blocks away from the central square. Pretty much everything the village has to offer (bank, supermarkets, its famous outdoor market, pharmacy) can be reached on foot (including the waterfalls close by). There is also a very popular popuseria (where you can get filled tortillas) just opposite the hostel. Within a ten-minute walk, you can also get the bus that goes toward the Guatemalan border (you do need to change buses to get there) or the one that goes on La Ruta de las Flores.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are dormitories as well as private rooms available. The dormitories have an average of four to five beds (singles and bunks), shelves, a large closet, ceiling fans, and a small TV. More importantly, all rooms seem to be freshly painted, equipped with comfortable mattresses, linen in very good condition, and are extremely clean. The rooms, and the area in general, are very peaceful and it is easy to enjoy a good nights sleep. The bathrooms are also very clean and you are given a towel, soap, and shampoo at check in. There is hot water and the shower pressure is excellent.
After the reception, you run into a huge living room/dining room/TV room area. There are plenty of sofas available there to relax and meet travelers. In addition, there is a hallway with a table and a few chairs if you are looking for more privacy, while there is also a nice garden (where you can get good internet reception). A fully functional kitchen equipped with all necessary utensils is also available (free drinking water provided). Finally, there is a large enclosed garage if you have your own vehicle.
This is not a party hostel and the village in general also isnt a party place. However, it has a very nice atmosphere and is an ideal place to relax and explore the village. The lady that runs it makes all the difference, as she is more than willing to provide information about the village and anything else you might need.
