Scandic Hostel Sarajevo

The Review

Scandic Hostel Sarajevo is located close to the tram station in the center of the capital city of Bosnia, in the heart of the Balkans. The city went through the war from for three years in the early to mid-nineties, and it is now welcoming tourists again and improving its economy. However not so many tourists can be seen here, compared to the surrounding countries, such as Croatia or Slovenia.

The Location

As mentioned, Scandic is very centrally located in the city, right in front of the National Theatre, where the free walking tours start daily. It is only a few minutes away to the tram stop by foot, and the train station and bus station can be reached with a twenty-minute walk or ten-minute tram ride. A few supermarkets are also available around the area, and shops and restaurants are all around there.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms tend to be very small, with a few beds available. It also gets hot inside -- at the time of our visit neither a fan nor air conditioning were available. Mattresses are thin and not of the best quality. There is only one bathroom available to be shared among all the guests, and the toilet is together with the shower, so there is waiting time. The place is kept clean but the bathrooms are very small and it gets dirty quickly.

Common Spaces

At the entrance, there is a small kitchen with a table that can be used by guests. However the cooking equipment is not provided and you need to ask to the owner-manager for it. There is a balcony with two sofas overlooking the national theatre. There is not really a vibe, as it looks more of a guestshouse where people just sleep and leave. It is hard to meet other travelers, even though there is a bar-club downstairs, which belongs to the same owners, but seems to attract only locals.

This hostel is of an average quality. Location is top, and the view from the balcony is also nice. However, the rooms are small and quite uncomfortable, and the bathroom is very tiny as well. It's ok for a night or two while exploring Sarajevo, and note that the free walking tours start right in front of the hostel.
