Southern Comfort Backpackers Reviews

Southern Comfort is clean and quiet, with a very friendly atmosphere -- it's ideal for a couple of nights before or after a trip to Stewart Island.

The Location

Invercargill, in the very south of New Zealand, is about three hours' drive from Queenstown and twenty minutes' drive to the Stewart Island ferry in Bluff. The hostel is situated about ten minutes' walk from the main shopping street in a quiet side street. On the way there you will pass a lot of eateries. A McDonald's with free Wi-Fi is just a two minutes' walk down the road. The NakedBus/Intercity bus stop is about seven minutes' walk from the hostel. The Queens Gardens are about five minutes away. To the big supermarket (Pack & Save), you will walk twenty minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers double, twin, share, and dorm rooms. The rooms are large enough and offer a bit of storage place for your belongings. Some of the rooms are en suite, but there are also communal bathrooms available. For bedding, you will have to pay a surcharge in the dorm rooms or you can use your own sleeping bag. The rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily. Lockers are not available, but luggage can be securely stored if you go hiking or to Stewart Island for a couple of days.

Common Spaces

The hostel is situated in a large backyard with some picnic benches and also clotheslines for drying your laundry. There is a nice, clean kitchen with a big fridge, a dishwasher, and free coffee and tea. The kitchen might get a bit crowded at night. Next to the kitchen you have common room with a dinner table, some couches, a log fireplace, and a book-exchange shelf. There is no TV. Internet is available via Wi-Fi or on the computer for guest use. A landline phone is also available, as are a washing machine and dryer.

Cars can be parked on the road in front of the hostel. Staff can help with booking standby tickets for Stewart Island flights.

Very bad people!!!!!!! very not friendly!!!!!!

It happened on the 2nd Apr. The service person is a guy said because the room just one person used that was me, so I need to pay NZ$50 for one room. I can't believe it, just one people live this room it's not my fault!!! but I need to pay two people's price. very bad service!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I stayed several days in this fabulous hostel, excellent backpacker in the South Island of NZ. We decided to come back there by the End 2009 for at least one week. Willy and his crew are perfect hosts.

Excellent Hostel

Stayed here for three nights -- it's got everything you need. I've stayed in many Hostels around the globe and this is up there!

New Zealand

Nice place, no TV (a big plus in my book), helpful staff. The only complaint I have is that I got stuck in a room with three guys who stunk to high-heaven, staff came over took a sniff and found another spot for me, what more could you ask for? I'm going back again in a few weeks and will stay here once more.

If you're looking for a small, friendly, clean, and welcoming hostel, look no further than Southern Comfort in Invercargill. Located near the main streets in town and the museum in a local neighborhood, Southern Comfort is a lovely house-turned-hostel. The front door leads to a hallway with plenty of information for backpackers. There is no formal reception, but you shouldn't have much trouble finding someone to check you into the hostel and show you to your room. Rooms are large and cheery with high ceilings and windows, with a combination of bunks and single beds in the dorms, and at least some are ensuite with clean bathroom and shower. Down the hall are additional bathrooms and showers and a washer and dryer.

The kitchen is perfect, complete with oven and most likely anything you'll need to cook up any meal (and there is a grocery store fairly close by). There is a small breakfast bar area overlooking the front garden, and through the door opposite this, a large dining room and lounge. Here you will find a nice wooden dining table near the window end of the room, and comfortable seating towards the other end. And for a nice change, you won't find a television in here, just a friendly atmosphere much more conducive to conversation and meeting fellow travellers. There is a book exchange shelf here, board games, and magazines--you'll want to sit down and relax awhile!

It can be hard to find these small intimate hostels during the fast-pace of travelling, and Southern Comfort is one of the best. Take a break from the large hostel scene and relax in this small, lovely, and pleasant hostel while you're in Invercargill.

If you have to be in Invercargill, this is the place to be (the hostel is better than the town). Very comfortable place. Great kitchen, featuring something I haven't seen anywhere else - a dishwasher. Also free Internet during the day, although on a slow connection.

Excellent place (I stayed in both houses on different trips). The staff are great; the kitchen is large and nice in the main building, but not the kitchen in the secondary building. Lounges are very cozy; rooms and beds are good. This is the best place to stay when you return from a long tramp on Stewart's Island.

Very comfortable and welcoming.

Merilyn I feel is an asset and went the extra mile to help make my stay very pleasant.

A home away from home.

I will certainly stay there when visiting Invercargill again and thank you.

This hostel has a delightful homey feel, with friendly visitors and a lovely host. You can feel the love and care thats been put into it. Highly recommend.

Wonderful! Immaculately clean, cozy, lovely staff :)

I arrived late - there were great arrangements for this.

Would definitely recommend! 10/10.

Awesome service and very friendly will come back again for sure

really excellent place! very cute and cozy old style home converted into hostel. girls dorm was large and spacious with en suite bathroom which was really nice. Kitchen was well stocked, clean and had a really cool eating area. really cozy lounge room as well. nice and quiet and a good central location. great value for money. 10/10

Excellent, homely feeling accommodation :)

The lady who worked there was friendly and it was clean. It was a bit quite when I was there, because covid, so it's hard to judge the atmosphere. I don't see myself returning but that has more to do with the city(nothing special and very far away) than the hostel. But if you're going to Stewart Island or the Catlins and are looking to stay the night in Invercargill, I would recommend this hostel.

Was amazing, so welcoming and friendly. Brenda was the highlight such an awesome lady. Best hostel weve stayed at.

Great spot beautiful house

Nice homely backpackers away from the centre. Nice garden on a sunny day and lots of boardgames for the evening.

This hostel is a beautiful house with stain glass and bay windows, a beautiful garden and courtyard. It is very warm and homely, room and kitchen very clean and has a dishwasher. It's an easy walk to shops and restaurants, on a quiet street. Would definitely stay again and recommend.

The location and garden were excellent. There was an incredibly grumpy and rude old man staying who dominated the small kitchen. He told my daughter to 'get out' when she was talking on her phone in the kitchen. He was rude and spoilt our stay. The person in charge of the hostel was also very grumpy when we arrived at one minute to eight having been held up in traffic. I have never been greeted in such an off-handed and rude manner. It was unpleasant.

manager doesn't relate too well to retired people perhaps. quite distant.

Very chill

Gorgeous house to stay in, with super helpful staff. Great location. Lovely garden too. Couldnt recommend more!

Really nice place to stay in Invercargill. Excellent location at the top of town and right next to the beautiful park. Kitchen and bathrooms were always very clean, and double room was very spacious. The host Brenda was also just lovely and deserves a shout out.

Cozy house in a nice neighborhood, very close to Queens Park. A few blocks away from central downtown Invercargill. Staff member was very kind- went out of his way to help us out. Good security- needed keys to get into room, but no lockers and a code to get into hostel after 10pm. Very clean facilities. Some free street parking. Generally pretty quiet hostel.

Beautiful house, beds could be a bit more comfy for the price but was okay :)

Staff very friendly and welcoming. My bus arrived in the morning and I got to check in right away. The building is gorgeous, the inside cosy and homely. It's well-kept and didn't feel old. Short walk from the bus but close to Queens Park. My stay at the hostel was a nice experience in a town that's rather dull.
