Southern Comfort is clean and quiet, with a very friendly atmosphere -- it's ideal for a couple of nights before or after a trip to Stewart Island.
Invercargill, in the very south of New Zealand, is about three hours' drive from Queenstown and twenty minutes' drive to the Stewart Island ferry in Bluff. The hostel is situated about ten minutes' walk from the main shopping street in a quiet side street. On the way there you will pass a lot of eateries. A McDonald's with free Wi-Fi is just a two minutes' walk down the road. The NakedBus/Intercity bus stop is about seven minutes' walk from the hostel. The Queens Gardens are about five minutes away. To the big supermarket (Pack & Save), you will walk twenty minutes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers double, twin, share, and dorm rooms. The rooms are large enough and offer a bit of storage place for your belongings. Some of the rooms are en suite, but there are also communal bathrooms available. For bedding, you will have to pay a surcharge in the dorm rooms or you can use your own sleeping bag. The rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily. Lockers are not available, but luggage can be securely stored if you go hiking or to Stewart Island for a couple of days.
The hostel is situated in a large backyard with some picnic benches and also clotheslines for drying your laundry. There is a nice, clean kitchen with a big fridge, a dishwasher, and free coffee and tea. The kitchen might get a bit crowded at night. Next to the kitchen you have common room with a dinner table, some couches, a log fireplace, and a book-exchange shelf. There is no TV. Internet is available via Wi-Fi or on the computer for guest use. A landline phone is also available, as are a washing machine and dryer.
Cars can be parked on the road in front of the hostel. Staff can help with booking standby tickets for Stewart Island flights.
