Hostel Meteora Reviews

Great hostel in a beautiful city!

Hostel is very clean, beds and toilet very well maintained. Staff were friendly and always there to help you.

Location is 5 minutes to the city square on foot and near nice restaurants and shopping area. 20 mins away to Kalambaka by bus which got a good public transportation.

Trikala city is much cheaper though with a lot more things to do especially at night. Absolutely recommended!

Great location, friendly and very helpful stuff!

Fabulous unique place. Atmosphere was very good. The owners and staff were extremely helpful, free coffee, water, and "arrival drink" were all nice. Clean rooms, good info about the city and the local taverna restaurant just down the road is perfect. Delicious cheap dinner after 8 pm and the bar is perfect meeting place for the residents. Lovely smiley people. Review has to be 100%!

One of the best hostels I have stayed at!

The staff was very helpful and cheerful. You'll get a delicious welcome drink (homemade wine -- juice or liquor) on your arrival. The hostel is decorated with a lot of passion and love for details. The linen, towels, and other facilities were clean and in good condition. The hostel is in a quiet neighbourhood just 5 min walking to the centre. The wifi is good everywhere in the hostel. The downstairs lounging and bar area had a good ambiance and easy to meet people.

Hey Julie and Dimitri, you have a very nice Hostel in such a beautiful environment. I enjoyed it a lot! After this no hostel will seem as good. Please keep it this way ... I will definitely be recommending it to anyone who wants to see Meteora! Thank you so much for showing us the best places in Trikala and for these filled paprika from your mom, yummy!!!!!!!

Go to Trikala city -- loved it!!!

Trikala or Kalampaka? I chose Trikala and I absolutely recommend it to everyone!!! Hostel Meteora is far the cheapest in whole area and very modern, clean and with a great Greek atmosphere. Dimitri and Juliana are really friendly and helpful, gave me all the information I needed for Greece and continuation of my journey to Albania. Train to Kalambaka takes 15 minutes and costs 1,4 euro but there are also tours available at the hostel every day. In addition to this, they give you a map with which you get a discount in a lot of restaurants, bars, cafes, bakeries etc. in Trikala and also 10% off in many hostels in Greece and in the Balkan countries!!!

This is the only hostel in the Meteora area and is very popular between backpackers because it's associated to a balkan network of hostels, especially to the studios arabas of Thessaloniki, owned by Dimitri's brother, Costa. So, many people come here to visit Meteora, but the distance isn't "only 10 miles," but 20 km from here to Kalambaka and then after 4-5 km to reach the Grand Meteoro monastery. Twenty minutes with a quickly car but 90 minutes with public bus. You have to leave the hostel at 7'50, 9'50 and 11'50 to go to the bus stop, take the bus to Kalambaka at 8,10 and 12 (30-40 minutes, 2,30euro) and than take the bus Kalambaka- Grand Meteoro at 9, 11 and 13 (15-20 minutes, 1,60euro). The last bus who come back to Kalambaka from the monastery is at 13,15, then taxies or feet. Single traveler, who sleeps in the hostel and takes the bus to Kalambaka, spends 17,10 euro (accommodation 12,50 2 bus tickets 4,60); he can save money because single rooms are very expensive in Kalambaka or Kastraki. But 2 or more persons can find a cheap accomodation in this last villages at the same price (17,10x2=34,20 17,10x3=51,30),avoiding the slow bus Trikala-Kalambaka. I add only, to complete the review upstairs, that in this hostel, at the ground floor, there are 2 dorms with 5 and 4 beds but only 4 lockers. Ask the receipt, as requested by greek law.

Response from the accommodation:

Best budget / quality accommodation in the area! Discount prices and special gifts for all our guests arriving from the best balkan hostels organisation and from Hostels of Thessaloniki! Also free transport from Trikala to Kalambaka very often! Besides, 1,4€ costs the train and takes 15 minutes to the village of Kalmbaka or 2,2€ the bus and takes 20 minutes. Trikala city is much bigger than Kalambaka, and not touristy, with many more options for going out, enjoying cheap and quality food, music events and many many options for the night. Buses to all Greek cities start from Trikala Central Bus Station.

Dmitri was super friendly, you may have to call the number on the door if he's not around and wait a couple of minutes. Wifi was good and the map and explanations of how to get to Meteora were excellent!

Hostel Meteora is a small hostel located in the cosy town of Trikala, designed specifically for travelers on a budget looking to spend time at the breathtaking Meteora monasteries.

The Location

The hostel is located in the town of Trikala. The hostel is well located in the centre of town, and it is an easy, twenty-minute walk from the train station. If you are arriving from another town by bus, you will be dropped at the main bus station. From the station there is a shuttle bus that runs every thirty minutes to the main square in Trikala. Then the hostel is approximately five minutes' walk from this intersection. The hostel is well positioned with many supermarkets, bakeries, and fruit stores nearby. The owner, Dimitri, is very helpful in suggesting places to eat for dinner, and also regarding the buses to Meteora. The hostel is within walking distance to the bus stop for Meteora, which is very convenient.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is small, with only one private room, and two dorm rooms of five beds. The rooms are basic, with just the bunk bed and a number of power outlets. There are no lockers, wardrobe/hanging area, and no locks on the doors to the rooms. It is a place where all guests are free to come and go as they please. The room does have good air conditioning, which is a bonus in the hot weather. The bathrooms are en suite to the dorm rooms and are a basic shower/toilet combination. There is a little room within the en suite for belongings. However, there are no shelves in the shower for toiletries. Hot water is plentiful and the water pressure is good. There are a number of additional toilets outside the rooms just in case someone is taking an extra long shower.

Common Spaces

The common spaces are small but sociable. There is a book exchange, but no communal computers for use. Information is provided in the common areas for day trips to Meteora and to other cities. There is also a kitchen, which consists of a fridge/freezer, sink and hob. Unfortunately, there is an additional fee to guests who want to cook their own food, which is unusual. Wi-Fi is included in the cost of the accommodation and is available in the common area as well as the rooms. The hostel advertises that breakfast is included in the price of the accommodation, however this does not seem to be the case. The atmosphere is chilled, and because of the size of the hostel it is easy to make new friends.

This is a basic hostel, with all of the potential to be great.

Hostel Meteora Reviews from the Web

Location wouldve been okay if anything was open, but Trikala is entirely closed on Sundays. The host, Dimitri, didnt bother to tell us this and let us wander the empty, desolate town, attracting sketchy looks from people on their balconies. The room was clean if you didnt look under the beds, and the reception area looks like a good place to get serial killed. The mentioned bikes, etc. are through the town, not Nomads, and are closed Sundays. The price was the only really good thing about it.

Unless you have a car, NOT 15 minutes cheap shuttle to meteora as description made it seem. Took 30 cab ~ 20 min hostel to meteora trail. You could also take the train into Kalambaka which is about an hour including walking time to the train and then to the trail. As for the hostel itself, first bed smelled a bit like pee but switched to another one since I was only one there. 20 minute walk from train. Stay here 1 night to see charming Greek town of Trikala then stay Kalambaka for meteora

Dimitris was super friendly and gave great tips for what to do in Trikala. Only there for one night, but must mention the comfy beds and incredible shower!!

Had a great stay at the hostel, its close to city center but get the luxury of quietness. Nice common areas to chill or work. Will stay again!

Wow! Sooo comfy and sooo pretty. Really great service from the staff.

Dimitri was very welcoming and gave us lots of goods tips and informations about the city and interesting places. However, the female staff wasnt very kind. She came many times in the dorm, even in the night while we were sleeping and woke us up and didnt even try to be quiet. The bathroom was very dirty (used toilet paper beside the trash), and the toilet device very unlikely to use, however when we ask for cleaning the staff did it and we thank them for it.

The smell of gasoline (dorm in the basement) have us headache.

Liked: one of the best hostels i've stayed at - friendly atmosphere, quirky decor, wonderful staff (Axel, Yana, Elliott - you're the best!) Didn't like: could do with one more shared bathroom

Good budget accommodation for visiting Meteora. The staff were very friendly.

The hostel located in a very central spot, so it's very easy to visit the city-center. The dorm that we slept was in a bad condition, with old furniture and not that clean. Moreover they were no lockers and dorm's door couldn't be locked-no one had the key actually. Although it was meant to host 6 people, both nights we were 8 or 9 people sleeping in. There was also a thing with privacy- cause the greek employee entered the room anytime she wanted and moreover she couldn't keep her voice low.

Great experience

this hostel is a disaster, not located in a nice neighbourhoud, dirty streets.

the hostel itself is not as clean as the reviews say. We went there end of October and there wasn't heating in the room!, nor in the corridors, freezing. Old hostel from the 70s where not much renovation has been done, expect changing the duvet covers!!! there is not really a kitchen, it is an outside little corner by the entrance (can't take advantage of it in winter that's for sure!) all the plants where dead, and it smelled a bit of cat piss to tell the true.

Anyway for the price I should have been in a normal hotel , so disapointing! it was not at all a good deal.

Not really reception , you are welcomed by the cleaning woman which sould not be a problem if her prentation was better, for godsakes you deal with the public! i have been in many hostel in my life but that is the worst one ever.

the reception and commun rooms are in the basement, quite dark!!! and humid especially without heating.

well message to the backpackers : don't go there! i worked in the hospitality industry and i do not understand how this hostel gets so good reviews! lack of professionalism!! conclusion old , kitch, and not attractive!

This hostel is about 40 minutes from Meteora, so I would not recommend staying there if your plan is to go there. The lockers didnt keep your stuff locked, and the front door was open often. The facilities were okay, but the bathroom was very small and had to be shared by a lot of people, so it was difficult.

Muy lindo hostel, un poco caluroso en verano. El staff es muy amable. Cocina y espacios comunes muy cmodos. Recomendado!

Really good place to chill, meet interesting people from all over the world, go and visit the amazing site of Meteora and visit Trikala (which is a nice and beautiful city!)

Everything is great, they provide all information you need for Trikala and Meteora. Only the location is a bit far (around 20 min by foot) from the train station.

Liked: The Central position and the possibility to stay in a hostel in Trikala Didn't like: The lack of facilities has been really overhelming for example we had a kitchen without pots to cook in we had a small heater no grill no microwave no heating working in the kitchen not a real common room ho hung around at night no laundry facilities not a good reception service it was only opened a few hours a day they did not answer to emails if we needed something

I would not call such a place an hostel

This should be a first class hostel because it has so much going for it. Great location right in downtown Trikala, and a 15 minute walk to the bus station to get you to Meteora, or Kalambaka to transfer to Meteora. Staff is very polite and helpful, common rooms are great. Nice open area near reception with comfortable couches, computers, books, etc. Small kitchen is great with free coffee and tea.....however the electric water heater needs to be replaced. Bits of plastic burning off with each use and getting into your tea, yuck!

Beds are comfortable and rooms are spacious and clean. Where it loses steam fast is with the facilities. The lockers in one dorm are laughable as they do not open properly and are made of wood. Regardless of the lock you can pull them open and stick your hand inside to take whatever you like or open a backpack zipper. The other lockers for the dor.s in the main room are all.broken. I even showed the employee on duty and she couldn't believe it. You put a lock on the handle but it turns and opens right up!

Bathrooms are just gross and not cleaned well. Hair all over the floor, and cobwebs and spiders on the ceiling and upper walls. In one dorm the shower door doesn't close all the way which gets water all over the floor. In the other shower for the other dorm, there is a makeshift shower that has no place to hang clothes or a towel without them getting soaked and getting water all over the bathroom floor which is dirty. A curtain separates the toilet which is almost hilarious.

You notice how it seems I was in 2 dorms? I was, because they moved all my stuff to another dorm while I was out to make o e dorm a private one. Not a big isssue, but it raises some security issues. My bag was still inside the other room, in the locker, but then you have the issue I stated at the beginning.

Overall a nice place with nice people, and as the only hostel option in the area around Meteora, you would assume things would be great. With some proper maintenance and cleaning this could be a really fine place for travelers.

Liked: Good access to computers. Didn't like: The lady manning reception (Nikki) was exceptionally rude when checking in. This was followed by dirty sheets which i was told by Demetrius (?) would not be changed because they were base sheets, regardless of the hair, make up and debris. Also shower leaked everywhere and wet half my clothes which the staff did not help in drying and rectifying at all and the wifi was unusable by the amount it dropped out. The location is not near Meteora (1 hr bus ride away) despite the name.

Beautiful clean private room and a charming hand drawn map of meteora.
