Hostal Restaurant La Cigale is a nice hostel in the center of the city with an attached bar and restaurant and average dormitory-style rooms. It's a good choice if you are willing to sacrifice common areas of the hostel for the bar/restaurant. It comes with a great breakfast served in the restaurant.
The Location
As it's located in one of the best sections of Cuenca, Hostal Restaurant La Cigale is in the center of everything you would want to see and do in Cuenca. You can find loads of nice bars and places to eat just within a few streets. It is also walking distance to Parque de Madre and interesting museums. It is very easy to find being close to the center of the city, you will notice the sign out front along with a colorful and artsy walkway leading to the front door. However, the bus station is about a forty-five-minute walk, because it is located further on the outskirts of the city and thus is a little far from many hostels within the center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are many of public bathrooms found scattered throughout the common areas in Hostal Restaurant La Cigale. They are cleaned frequently and contain showers with hot water also. There are a few dormitory rooms from which to choose -- they are a mix of bunk beds and standard twin beds. There is adequate space and electrical outlets within the bedrooms and decent Wi-Fi.
Common Spaces
Hostal Restaurant La Cigale is obviously a restaurant as well, and thus the primary common area is the bar and dining area for the restaurant. Consequently, it lacks some of the more traditional common spaces for a hostel of this size to relax. However, there are a few other tiny spaces that are more separate from the restaurant. One on the first floor has a nice hammock and some chairs, although it is still close to the bar and can be loud. There is a tiny table with some chairs upstairs, but not much else.
Summary
Hostal Restaurant La Cigale's best feature is its location, making almost everything within Cuenca very accessible. The convenience of having an attached bar/restaurant comes with the drawbacks of being noisy at times. Also, it lacks some quiet common areas just for meeting other travelers (not customers for the restaurant). Overall, this is a nice value hostel in a great spot in the city.

• By Taxi:
• The easiest way to get to La Cigale is by taxi. It's $2.50 from the main bus station (Terminal Terreste), and $3 from the airport (Mariscal Lamar International Airport) which both take approximately 5 min. Make sure you check the price with the driver beforehand. Once in the taxi, tell the driver Honorato Vasquez and Luis Cordero. At this corner, La Cigale is the yellow painted house two houses down on Honorato Vasquez opposite the church.
• By Bus:
• The 7, 10 and 26 buses leave outside the main bus station and airport at the local bus station every 10 min. The buses cost 25c a trip and should take about 20 min including walking time.
• For the 7 bus, get off at Parque de la Madre on Avenida 12 de Abril. Cross the river to the right on Hermano Miguel and walk two blocks up the stairs to Calle Larga. Turn left on Calle Larga for one block, then turn right onto Presidente Borrero. Walk one block past Coffee Tree and turn left at La Merced church onto Honorato Vasquez. Walk one block and La Cigale is the yellow house on your right at 7-80.
• For 10 and 26 buses, get off at Mariano Cueva and Honorato Vasquez. At this intersection, facing away from the direction the bus came from, walk right along Honorato Vasquez for three blocks until the end of the street and La Cigale is the yellow house on your right at 7-80.
• By Car:
• From La Castellana, head NW on Valencia toward Avenue Espana (94m). Turn left onto Avenue Espana and go through one roundabout (1.5km). At the second roundabout, take the second exit onto Avenue Huayna-Capac (900m). Turn right onto Honorato Vasquez and drive to the end of the street (850m).
• La Cigale is the yellow house on the right opposite La Merced church. Parking is on the street or there is a carpark down the street for $5 per day. Whole trip should take 5 minutes.
