Melaleuca on Mitchell - Darwin YHA Reviews

Terrible

Very cold room -- we had to sleep with 2 blankets & sweater on. No hot water! We left our bags there for some days & they hardly could find them when we came to pick them up. That is not a service & you can not do this with your guests! Shame on them! Avoid it, there are much nicer hostels close by.

Absolutely disgusting

After staying at this venue over 20 times periodically in 12 months (usually in private rooms at premium rates on the company) and checking in every single time at 2.30am each time which corresponds to when my Sydney to Darwin flights arrive in Darwin, a pre adolescent idiot decides to tell me that he doesn't check people in at 2am in the morning (the only reason I stayed at this 24 hour hole in the first place and have done so every other time) leaving me and my business partner to sleep in the park with the homeless. And proceeded to tell me that I'd never been there before but refusing to check his data base with my name on my ID. Absolutely disgraceful, would not recommend the service to anyone. It appears their main focus of business is to exploit one time only visiting tourists. Never had service as disgraceful in my life.

Melaleuca on Mitchell is one of the Base-affiliated hostels, making it a good option for those with Base accommodation packages. It is centrally located right across the street from the transit centre, making it easy to get to. The hostel is a very large complex with a wide variety of room types from which to choose.

The Location

The hostel is located directly opposite the Darwin transit centre on Mitchell Street, the main street in Darwin where many of the hostels are located. There is a Cole's supermarket right across from the street, and there are also several restaurants and cafe's located on the street as well.

Rooms and Bathrooms/b>

The hostel is composed of three floors of bedrooms. The third floor is the girls-only floor, which definitely makes girls who are traveling alone feel much more secure. The rooms range in size, and come complete with lockable cupboards as well. All rooms have air conditioning units, fans, and full-length mirrors.

The bathrooms are very large, with several showers and toilets in each bathroom block. The showers are fairly roomy, and have an enclosed dressing area as well.

Common Spaces

The first-floor area of the hostel has a large, outdoor common area. There is a pool for guest use, a bar area, an eating area, and the kitchen facilities. The bar has great specials during happy hour, and is often a great place to meet other travelers. The kitchen is a large, industrial-style kitchen, with several hobs, sinks, a large food preparation area, and many fridges for guest use. Guests must rent their own plate and cutlery set for a small deposit, which they will get back when the return it upon check out. The ground floor level of the hostel also has a common area with computers, which guests can use upon purchase of internet time cards using the Global Gossip system.

Summary

This hostel is good value for money, and the bar and drink specials make it a great place to relax in the evenings and socialize. The central location is very convenient, and air conditioning and fans in every room definitely add to comfort.

Ok

Those looking for a party would probably give this hostel 5 stars. However, if you ask for a room facing the quiet side of the building, it is indeed reasonably quiet. My biggest complaint is the lack of cleanliness. There should be more frequent cleaning with the large volume of backpackers passing through.

Good

We spent 2 nights at the MOM for vacation. Very well located at a few steps from the Transit Centre, bars, restaurants, clubs. There's a supermarket (Coles) in front of. A lot of fun there with the bar, pools (we enjoyed a late swim at 10pm!) and loud music but it may disturb people in the dorms right next to deck. A lot of people there but staff is pretty organized. Rooms are big enough and no problem about cleanliness. Even if I had to fix on my own a small issue about the window, I enjoyed my stay there and I would recommend it for partying and having fun with friends.

Very loud

I arrived late in the evening and it took me almost half an hour to check in because the reception was so busy and very small. They copy your ID as well. There are a few good things about that hostel but even more bad things. Good: they have female only dorm, good showers, clean bathrooms, internet and tour desk, party hostel, rooms have lockers. Bad: it smells disgusting in the floors because the pub/restaurant is right under the hostel, it is very loud the walls are thin and it's right next to the main street so not very good for sleeping, rooms are very basic very plain with no atmosphere, bathroom didn't have any power points where do you dry your hair?, beds are very thin and the mattress is out of plastic, staff isn't very friendly, the rooms are hot even thought they have a aircon in there. All together I didn't like the hostel, if you are just after party and don't care about the rest of the hostel then that's your place.

Good party hostel...bad if you are working

Stayed her for one week, simply because you could only stay a max of 7 nights when it was the high season. You had to check out after that and hope you could check back in. This was the same in most of the hostels so not their fault. Good place to go if you like the pool, and the bar and the music loud. I was working while I stayed here, so it was a tough to sleep.

Good but some annoying things

It was a nice hostel, great bar and pool, the dormitory was very big with only 4 beds and it's only 10 dollars deposit for the key. But I would not recommend it: you need your electronic card (key) all the time, not only to enter your room but also to go to the pool, between floors, and even in the elevator, and in the elevator it didn't work!! Very annoying. Plus the mattresses are covered with plastic, it makes a lot of noise when someone moves.
