Wish the attendants are more accommodating and approachable.
JJ's Backpackers Village in Siquijor is one of the more popular hostels on the island, and quite possibly the only one to offer a true backpacker experience.
The hostel is located about ten kilometers from the port, and is accessible by motorbike or by tricycle (motorcycles with a sidecar attached). It is possible to rent motorbikes or scooters on the island, but we have not found any place that rented bicycles. The hostel is located within walking distance of a small fruit and vegetable market as well as a few small hotels that have their own restaurants. It is not close to the centre of town, but the tricycles are not expensive and a lot of people rent scooters at least for part of their stay.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one dorm room as well as a few private rooms and three tents. During our stay, a second house was being built to accommodate more guests. The rooms are basic but clean. They seem newly built and have a nice, rustic look. There are large lockers for each guest in the dorm. There are several outlets, but they are all on one side of the room. There is a floor pivoting fan, which unfortunately didn't reach the top bunk beds; there is no air conditioning.
The bathroom is typically southeast Asian in that the shower is in the same room as the as the toilet and sink. There is no divider, but there is enough room to allow for taking a shower without soaking your clothes, towel, and the toilet paper. There also is no hot water, which is also typical of low-budget accommodations in the Philippines.
There are two common spaces -- one small (for computer use only) and a larger restaurant/dining room area. The latter is where people usually hang out, and it has a nice, laid-back, social atmosphere. It shouldn't be hard to meet people. There is also a small, outdoor kitchen area that guests can use that is separate from the staff kitchen.
The tents and common area are right on the beach and the view is gorgeous. The water is unfortunately too shallow (even at high tide), so it's pretty much impossible to swim. The most you can do is sit in the water to cool off.
We would recommend JJ's to anyone looking to meet other backpackers, or people traveling by themselves. The owners are a friendly couple; they live on the premises. It's one of the few hostels in Siquijor that has a backpacker feel to it and it can be daunting to solo travelers to be surrounded by couples and families only.
