Funky Green Voyager

The Review

Want to stay in a real villa? Then Funky Green Voyager is made for you. It's a small place with few people and a super cosy atmosphere. And there is all the chilling space you could ever wish for!

The Location

The hostel is located out of the town centre, which is really convenient if you have your own car and need parking space -- there is plenty on the premises and on the wide, quiet side street in front of the hostel. It's apparently equally inconvenient for travelers relying on public transport, as this means a fair bit of walking. Another convenience is the nearby shopping centre -- it's basically across the street and includes two huge supermarkets, a sports store, some smaller stores, Domino's, and some other fast-food joints. Despite the shopping centre the area is really quiet -- no street noise, no nothing. It's also easy to find, just two turns of the main road.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are nice and bright with good mattresses and the occasional couch in some of them. Unfortunately the top bunks (which are really high up) do not have any bars on the side, so light sleepers better not opt for those. A problem for some might be that the walls are rather thin and basically only keep out light but not noise. As in most New Zealand hostels, there are no lockers but you can leave valuables for safe storage at the reception. Most of the power outlets are not functioning in the rooms and force people to relocate to the kitchen. The bathrooms are shared and in two separate locations inside the house. Rooms and bathrooms are kept decently clean. The smaller, blue bathroom apparently has some issues as the water from the shower doesn't drain properly.

Common Spaces

The common areas are really nice. There is a bright kitchen, with a double-sided stove and a lot of clean utensils as well as herbs and spices (for a donation). Right next to it is a combined living/dining room with a real fireplace a couch, chairs, and a big dining table. There are also books and games, which tend to be played by the guests most nights. Adjacent to this room is the winter garden with more seating options. Surrounding the house is a nice garden with a BBQ pit that is free to use. There is no internet connection inside the house but during reception hours the internet PC there can be accessed.

It's a lovely quiet place that makes it real easy to get in contact with fellow travelers. Especially the convenient parking situation and closeness to shopping options make it an ideal stop for travelers with their own wheels who need to stock up on supplies. The helpful reception can sort out most of your needs and give advice on what to do with your spare time!

The Funky Green Voyager is a remarkable little hostel with a great social atmosphere but without a full-on party vibe. The Location It is a fifteen-minute walk from the main bus station and well worth the walk to stay here. An airport bus can drop you off at the doorstep on request. Rooms and Bathrooms With fewer than thirty beds, the hostel immediately gives off a warm and welcoming feel. The absence of locks on the doors gives it a home from home feel. If you are worried about your valuables, lockers are available. There are six beds to a dorm, which make the rooms quite small. No duvet covers are supplied on the beds, but the hostel will provide blankets or duvets on request. The showers and bathrooms are immaculate, supplied with soaps and hand towels. There are enough shower cubicles to avoid fighting for that morning shower. Common Spaces The hostel has an outstanding kitchen -- spotless with plenty of room. The owner cooks fresh scones each morning that sell for a small price -- these get snapped up in minutes. Recycling is encouraged, with plenty of bin space for everyone's plastics and beer bottles. There is a small area in the middle of the garden for smokers. There is a big supermarket opposite to get all your groceries or it's a ten-minute walk into town. With honesty boxes throughout the hostel including the beer fridge, the hostel creates a great atmosphere for travelers to hang out in the garden in the evenings. If it's too cold to hang out in the garden, there is a gorgeous lounge with fire and a chill out conservatory area. There is no TV at the hostel -- the hostel creates its own atmosphere. Summary The hostel has a great travel information section, with leaflets and fliers for everything to do in and around Rotorua. The staff are extremely helpful too -- they will book tours and give out advice on what to do in the area. This is a tranquil but social gem, funky, green, and a perfect stay for your voyage.

This hostel is very well-run and clean. I stayed in the bungalow across the road which lacked a bit in atmosphere but the facilities were all fine. The owner was helpful and the hostel is in a quiet suburb, only ten minutes' walk to the town centre. My only complaint would be that the bathroom locks need replacing.
Would highly recommend the funky green. Hostel was fantastic and much more personal and relaxing than many of the big chain hostels I've stayed in. The communal areas were great -- no TV so very sociable, rooms very clean and comfortable, location ideal for shops and tourist attractions, management extremely friendly and helpful. Definitely one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in.
very clean and well-equipped and easy to use facilities. warm and cozy common area. very near to big markets. kind host and people. excellent!
After eight months of travelling I thought I'd seen some amazing hostels but nothing compared to the fantastic Funky Green and its amazing staff (Paul, Tam and Tom). I only booked in for one night and ended up staying for almost three weeks. The atmosphere is fantastic, no TV for a change, so it's really social. The beer fridge is great and always full. Great advice, great location, great kitchen. So thank you everyone for making it so amazing. I'll definitely be back soon, so always keep one bed free!!! Everyone loves it here.

I spent four months travelling around New Zealand and staying in backpackers from December 04 to April 05, and I have to say that Funky Green was the best hostel I stayed in. If you are going to Rotorua there is nowhere else you should be staying. Gerard and Anja were so helpful and friendly (and funny, too) and their recycling obsession is worth five stars on its own. They certainly know how to run a hostel and have thrown themselves into it heart and soul. Good on ya, guys, you are the best.

This hostel was so good! It has a very sociable and really friendly staff!
This is the best hostel out of the hundreds I stayed at in New Zealand and Australia. The owners are a little kooky and look like Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor and Uma Thurman (not at the same time, that would be horrible). Anyway you must stay here and tell them Tim the Scot sent you and you demand a discount! Enjoy.
