The Landing Hotel

The Review

The Landing Hotel is conveniently located, clean, and comfortable. It is a great place to stay in Ometepe if you are just going to explore the local attractions around the Moyogalpa area. If you are looking at exploring other parts of the island, it may be a little bit too far away as it takes approximately three hours one way on a bus to the other side of the island.

The Location

The Landing Hotel is located just a short walk up from where the boats dock in Moyogalpa on the island of Ometepe. Moyogalpa is one of the largest towns on the island and as such you will find most of your amenities that you will need during your stay on Ometepe within close proximity from the hostel such as pharmacies, restaurants, and convenience stores. It is also close to Volcan Concepciones if you decide that you would like to take up the challenge of hiking this and it can be done from Moyogalpa in one day.

Rooms and Bathrooms

They have a lot of different types of rooms here in The Landing Hotel. They have standard dorm rooms, which have comfortable beds and linen in them, with shared bathrooms and toilets that reside outside of the room. If you are traveling in a group, it is possible to rent out apartments with dorm type beds in them, a self-contained bathroom, and a makeshift kitchen area with no facilities except a sink. The bathrooms are kept clean and well maintained, as are the rooms.

Common Spaces

The main common area in The Landing Hotel is the large bar and restaurant area in the front of the hostel as you enter. Here you can order drinks and food and sit around and relax at the tables. They also have a garden area out the back where you can chill out and relax in a more earthy environment. All of the rooms are located surrounding these central common spaces so there is good security from the staff that work there and they are always around if you need any help during your stay here.

It is not an overly social hostel so it may be difficult to meet people here and it is not one of the more common hostels for backpackers, but it is quiet and subdued if that is what you are looking for.

Decent place with nice staff
Respectable facilities that are unique in several aspects. "Good" by world standards, perhaps a bit higher relative to Nicaraguan norms. The town is nothing special, but can serve as a base to the rest of island by bike or motorcycle. As the photos show, they have a nice front lobby and upper deck relax area.
As the street sign of this hostel says, it looks expensive, but it's not. Perhaps depending on the season, but you get a private room with bathroom for $15, which is good. But the problem is, the room smells really horrible from the drain of bathroom, as there's no door between bedroom and bathroom. Also, there are small ants everywhere, they bite you on the bed while you are sleeping and it's really sore. Plus, there were small insects all over the upper bank of my bed when I first entered the room. That was disgusting. The staff are very helpful, chilled locals, I like them a lot. But the owner, who is not a local, is not friendly at all. Although I stayed there for 5 nights and he of course recognized me as a guest, he hardly said even hi. The bar, balcony, common space are nice as you can see in the pics but they have to work out on other things like bugs and smell, otherwise remains very unbalanced impressions.
Although not threatened by a barrage of competition from other hostels, Landing Hostel offers excellent value for money and convenience in the small town of Moyogalpa. Staff will readily offer advice on possible treks and readily point you in the direction of the best restaurants in the area. With all the beauty that Ometepe has to offer, you won't be spending a lot of time in the hostel, but this place is what you are looking for -- it's laid-back, homey, and close to everything. You may end up stopping here a bit longer than you had first planned! The Location Only a hundred meters from the main port on Ometepe Island, the hostel is one of the first sights that await you on your arrival. Moyogalpa itself is tiny and you can walk it entirely in only half an hour. Yet within this tourist haven you will find grocery stores, restaurants, and bars that will quench your thirst after a hard day's hike. Rooms and Bathrooms There are two dorm rooms, each containing three sturdy, wooden bunk beds. Outside are the two communal showers. The water pressure is good, but like elsewhere on the island, there is no hot water. The three private rooms are found upstairs and all feature private bathrooms, although in reality this is part of the room and only segregated by a wall. Common Spaces Common spaces are more than ample for the size of hostel. Downstairs, you will find the bar and restaurant, which are open to non-guests. Upstairs you will find three hammocks, and even a small gym, should the exercise of trekking the volcano for eight hours not be enough for you. All areas are spotlessly clean and give a perfect space to relax after a long day. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel for free, although the password seems a closely guarded secret by the staff -- they require you to pass your device to them for it to be input. Summary In a town where businesses are competing mostly on price, it is nice to find a place with excellent facilities that is centrally located and close enough to the port that you don't have to lug those huge backpacks up the hill. That being said, though, during our stay, a girl had a mobile phone stolen from a locked dorm room; since she and her friends were the only ones in there, questions have to be asked of the staff. Overall, we recommend to go for it, but probably it's best to bring your own padlock.
