Romangelo Ii Hostel is a low-cost hostel next to the Termini train station. It has clean facilities and the basics like outlets, hot water, and a kitchen, but lacks consistent Wi-Fi, helpful staff, common areas, or a good atmosphere for socializing.
The Location
The hostel is a bit tricky to identify; there is a large green door with no sign, with only a very small note with "Romangelo" written next to the call buttons for the building. The surrounding area is touristy and slightly sketchy at night. The hostel is next to the Termini train station (about one minute's walking) and is surrounded by many restaurants and tourist shops. It is a thirty-minute walk to the city center. The metro stop from Termini is an easy starting point to reach most attractions in the city. From the Termini station, there are several ways (train and bus) to reach the local airports that take around thirty minutes to an hour.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Romangelo Ii offers private room options for up to four guests as well as four-bed mixed dorms. Each guest receives a key set (one to the door from the street, one to the hostel, and one to the room). There are no lockers in the rooms, but valuables can be locked at the reception. The beds are small metal bunk beds. There are many electronic outlets all around the room. Wi-Fi is very intermittent and slow, if it's working, in the dorm room. The dorms have an en suite bathroom, which is clean and modern. The shower is spacious, with good water pressure, but the temperature of the water fluctuates rapidly and sometimes stays cold or lukewarm for a period of time.
Common Spaces
The only common space is the kitchen, which is a clean area with a large table and chairs. The kitchen can be used by guests from midday to evening hours. In the morning there is a free, basic, self-service breakfast available (coffee, tea, toast, crackers, jam). Near the kitchen, there is a small book exchange. The Wi-Fi throughout the hostel is unreliable, but usually best in the kitchen. This is not a social hostel, because many guests are staying in the private rooms and/or staying because it is a budget option near the train station.
Summary
Overall, this hostel provides a clean space and basic accommodation that's best designed for guests who need to stay close to the Termini train station. The staff are not very helpful or welcoming, and some amenities that are advertised (like free Wi-Fi and hot water) do not always work. The neighborhood is not the best for visiting Rome or going out at night, but if you need to see Rome on a budget and won't be hanging out at the hostel for too long each day, Romangelo Ii is a decent option.
