Surat Bay Lodge

The Review

Surat Bay Lodge is a quiet place close to Owaka, which makes it suitable for long stays as you can buy food and eat out, compared to other areas of the Catlins with no shops or restaurants. Internet is available through the hostel's own computer or directly on your laptop.

The Location

The surroundings of Surat Bay Lodge couldn't be more beautiful if you love nature, since you can literally step out of the hostel and walk on the beach just to find sea lions, fur seals, and all sorts of birds and maybe even hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) if you walk to Cannibal Bay (twenty minutes' walking from the hostel). Surat Bay has no shops or restaurants, just several houses, but it is seven kilometers away from Owaka, the largest town in the Catlins, with several cafes and a medium-sized supermarket.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are clean and well proportioned, with some storage space and quite airy. The hostel has dorm rooms as well as double rooms distributed in several units. The lack of multiple shower compartments means you often have to wait for the shower or just to use the bathroom. The hostel uses rain water, so the hostel management encourages you to take short showers of five minutes only as the water is limited. The shower has a soap rack.

Common Spaces

Although spacious, the common room includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room all together, with only one dining table (five seats) for the whole room. The kitchen has a big fridge, oven, four stoves, several cooking utensils, plates, and cutlery. The hostel management also offers several French menu options if you do not have your own food or do not feel like cooking. The living room has a TV and a sofa area, with a small bookshelf with books in several languages.

The hostel has a very welcoming outside green area with wooden picnic tables. It has also a shed where you can store or tie your bikes and shelter them from the rain. The reception is not always open, but there is a button you can press and a member of staff will appear immediately.

Surat Bay Lodge can be a very convenient and interesting option if you want to spend some time in a remote location surrounded by nature.
