Hostel Uppelink Ghent

The Review

Hostel Uppelink Ghent has an amazing view over Ghent and offers a well-stocked bar where guests receive a discount on each beer. There are walking tours that start right from the hostel (English in the morning and Spanish in the afternoon). The hostel is a nice spot to relax after a day of exploring Ghent.

The Location

Hostel Uppelink is in the perfect location -- right on the water with a beautiful view of St. Michael's Bridge and old town. Major tourist attractions are within a ten-minute walk from the hostel. You can walk from the train station to the hostel in approximately thirty minutes; however public transport is also easily accessible.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are multiple dorm rooms available including five-, six-, seven-, eight-, nine-, ten-, and fourteen-bed dorms. Each bed has a partition, so you are not sleeping right next to someone else. Each bed also has its own medium-sized locker; make sure you bring your own padlock, or grab one from the hostel reception for free. Additionally, there are twin and double rooms available.

There is a large shower room on the top floor with six showers for everyone; be prepared for a line up in the mornings. The showers have a private dressing room with multiple hooks and a bench, and the shower is next to it with a release tap (you have to press it every minute or so for longer water). The showers have plenty of hot water. There are two toilets on every floor and more available in the shower room.

Common Spaces

There is a large, fully equipped kitchen on the lower floor, where several tables are provided. The kitchen has everything you will need, however only two or three people can be cooking at once. The kitchen looks over the water, as does the common room where breakfast is served,

The common room is right next to the kitchen and includes a well-stocked bar. The room has ample space with several tables and chairs, and clusters of couches. Board games are available and there is a large selection of books for exchange.

The breakfast that is served is basic; however, it offers white and brown bread and is always stocked. More showers would be beneficial, especially in the morning times. Overall Hostel Uppelink is a great hostel located in the heart of Ghent.

Great, I'd stay here again
Beds are comfy. The mixed dorm room is large and has a great view of the skyline. The showers and toilets are clean and spacious. The showers have good flow and temperature control. Breakfast is good (cereal and toast). It's close to all the sights. I like the RFID keys, much easier than traditional keys.

Excellent hostel; would stay again
Friendly staff, fantastic location, easy to get to, close to Ghent's main sights, excellent staff recommendations, comfortable beds, ok storage lockers, good WiFi, towels for rent (cheap), good price, good breakfast, good check-in/check-out policies. The only downsides are that the showers don't work too well -- they both give off too little water and drain poorly -- and that there is no elevator. The kitchen is fully equipped and new. Clean bathrooms.

This Place Rocks!
One of the best hostels I have stayed in over the past 4 years of continuous travel. I would put this in the top 10 of the 100 hostels I have stayed in. Excellent location. Clean rooms. Big bathrooms. Friendly staff. Great lockers in the rooms. A nice filling breakfast. And did I mention the friendly staff? I will stay here again.

Right downtown
Very recently renovated (october 2012), this hostel has shiny new rooms in an old building right across from a cathedral in the center of town. Price was a little higher than across town, but the location alone might well be worth it. Breakfast is included, but it's nothing special compared to what you get anywhere else in belgium. Downsides -- rooms were a little cold, and there was no kitchen for the the hostelers to use. Very nice place right in the heart of ghent, the renovation was clearly quite successful.
