Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Troka Prewar Residence is indeed a hostel, despite its unusual name (it is a converted, large, old house). It was renovated recently, so it's in excellent condition. The location is good for the main areas of interest; the staff are excellent; breakfast of toast and jam is provided free; tea and coffee (the real stuff) are served free all day; and cafe prices, including those for beer, are cheap. There's free, good-quality Wi-Fi, though it does not reach to all rooms. It's all nonsmoking except for the street front tables of the cafe.

The Location

Troka is situated on the edge of the old Chinatown and within easy walking distance of the many historic, cultural, and gastronomic locations most people want to visit. The directions to find it are excellent. There are all levels of eating places nearby from the range of cuisines that Malaysia has to offer; Malacca (Melaka) is truly cosmopolitan. For odds and ends there are many "open all hours" small shops nearby, but no real supermarkets.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are fine and the bunks sturdy, but like some other hostels in Malaysia, the room walls do not all come up to the ceiling (apparently to help airflow in the hot humid days that exist most of the year). Our private room provided enough facilities and a reasonable amount of room to move about.

The bathrooms are in the local style and a bit basic, with a Western WC available, but they are clean enough and there's hot water on demand. The security lockers (in a stairwell) are rather flimsy and should be upgraded.

Common Spaces

There are two areas, the cafe/reception at the front where you are welcome to bring in outside food and drink, and the lounge area with a TV/DVD and free discs. They are plenty big enough for the number of guests Troka can accommodate. If you buy beer in the cafe, you might be asked to get it from the fridge and open it yourself depending on the the staff at the time and their adherence to the Muslim preference against alcohol.

Summary

The attractive refurbishment of the building, the superb helpfulness of the manager and her staff, the closeness to the main attractions, and the good prices make this a superb place to stay. More attractive bathrooms would be nice, but there's nothing actually wrong with the ones they have.

Place average, Service good
particularly note that the owner is willing to four pair of customers from his hostel to the bus station. It save the time and the money a lot.
