Hostal Bakano Backpackers

The Review

Hostal Bakano Backpackers is a clean and modern hostel with plenty of character located in the heart of La Candelaria.

The Location

Located at the bottom of La Candelaria (old town) part of Bogotá, Hostel Bakano is perfectly located to explore the city. From here you are five minutes' walk to the closest TransMilenio (bus) stop (Las Aguas) and less than ten minutes' walk from all the museums and other major landmarks. The area is crammed with bars and restaurants. A taxi from the airport should take about twenty-five minutes.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are a little basic, with no decoration and no fixtures apart from the metal bunk beds. The bunk beds are a little creaky, but the mattresses and pillows are comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. Unfortunately there is only one plug to be shared among the guests of the four-bed dorm.

The communal bathrooms are located alongside the main common area. Behind the saloon-style doors are three showers (all but one offering hot water at good pressure) and two toilets. Privacy is an issue here, as the showers are behind a curtain and the toilets are behind a plastic shutter that cannot be locked. The bathrooms are adequately cleaned on a daily basis.

Common Spaces

As you walk through the front doors, you are faced by a communal space featuring two hammocks and a couple of small seats. Further back is the kitchen area with a cooker and all utensils that you would need to rustle up something for yourself. The free breakfast that comprises of cereal, bread, and coffee is served here until 11 a.m. In front of the kitchen is a bar-style seating area with three tables and a number of stools. This area also features a television. At the back of the building is a small garden with a table and three chairs. In the reception area are two communal computers that are free to use. Here you will also find the strong metal lockers that can be secured by a padlock. There is also another TV in this area.

Hostel Bakano is certainly well above average in an area of town dominated by tourism and completely saturated with rival accommodation. Hot water, lockers, clean communal spaces, and a good vibe make this hostel one of the major players in La Candelaria.

Cold. Good Location. Could have spirit but owner lacks imagination
Came on a Monday for a single room. Was told there were no reservations on the room. Was given a price. Manager assured me all ok. Following Friday I pay in the AM that afternoon I'm told I have to move to a tiny little closet like room with no window in terrible location that they have reservations. Extremely stupid. Extremely selfish and rude. The owner has zero imagination. Solely interested in money. Nothing else. Details are atrocious. No attention to safety or detail. The maid/kitchen helper struggles to be helpful. Kitchen is crappy. Huge shame because the space could be just fine. The owner doesn't have a clue -- just selfish and irresponsible. The WIFI works on and off. Often off. Cold and no attempt to warm it. Find somewhere else -- lots of options.

Helpful staff, nice building, needs finishing
We had a private twin room. Work still being done on the place so had no lock, blinds are temporary and did not close properly. Dorm experience likely to be better as had great common area.
