KulturBerlin Sucre is a large, popular hostel located within Sucre’s historical centre. It is situated within a beautiful Colonial house, which also houses a restaurant, a bar/nightclub, and a travel agency. Spanish lessons can be organised through the hostel. There are nightly events such as dance shows and salsa lessons. There’s a lot going on at KulturBerlin Sucre -- you won’t have a dull moment!
The Location
The location is fantastic -- just two blocks from the main square, KulturBerlin Sucre is within walking distance of the historical sites; the central market; the Recoleta viewpoint; and plenty of shops, restaurants, and ATMs. It is on a very pretty street lined with trees and white Colonial houses. The area feels safe. There are usually plenty of people around, but not too much traffic.
The Sucre bus station is a little out of town, but can be reached in around five minutes by taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a range of private rooms and dorms; rooms are spacious with high ceilings and most of them have windows allowing in natural light, and some have balconies. They are clean and well decorated.
The bunk beds are very spacious and have comfy mattresses and warm blankets. There are plug sockets next to each bed. The doors to the dorms do not lock, but small lockers are provided for valuables. The Wi-Fi signal reaches most bedrooms, although it can be slow at times.
Most rooms open onto a large, indoor balcony that looks down onto the restaurant/bar area. This means that noise from the bar can be heard clearly in the rooms, which some people may find irritating. This is not the place to come if you want an early night, especially on weekends when loud music plays until late.
There are several communal bathrooms spread around the hostel. They are kept clean and well stocked with toilet paper and liquid soap. The showers produce hot water at good pressure.
Common Spaces
There are three main common areas -- an indoor balcony with seating, a garden with chairs and hammocks, and the restaurant/bar area. Most socialising takes place in the restaurant/bar area. A delicious buffet breakfast (included in the room price) is served here between 8 and 10 a.m. After breakfast, the restaurant is opened to non-hostel guests.
Despite being a social hostel with nightly events, the atmosphere is not particularly conducive to meeting new travelers, particularly for those traveling solo. Since the main social area is the restaurant, people are already sitting around tables, so there is no easy way of joining a group. Moreover, the restaurant is open to the public, so it is not always easy to tell who is staying at the hostel. In spite of this, the hostel has a fantastic lively atmosphere, with nightly events in the restaurant/bar area such as traditional dance shows, movie nights, and salsa lessons.
Summary
KulturBerlin Sucre has a prime location, a buzzing social atmosphere, and nightly events in the bar. It also has a delicious buffet breakfast included in the price. KulturBerlin offers fantastic atmosphere and value for money and is a great option for those looking to party!
